Muslims Banned From Yoga

That's the official word from the National Fatwa Council, the national Islamic body, as highlighted in Malaysiakini website. It has considered yoga 'haram' ("unIslamic" in a way) and thus muslim folks in Malaysia cannot practise yoga.

Even though there is a fatwa being issued, it's not legally binding on the muslim folks in Malaysia unless it has been enshrined in the national or shariah laws but muslim folks tend to abide the edicts.

The Islamic Development Department (Jakim) will provide further explanations if people decided to seek clarification. The chairman, Datuk Dr Abdul Shukor Husin, was quoted to have said that "yoga practice among Muslims had also been banned in Singapore and Egypt".

The fitness centres in Malaysia will be sweating right now as muslim customers could be withdrawing or cancelling their memberships. I wonder whether the customers will lose their deposits or forfeit memberships fees paid in advance.

What is Yoga actually that caused it being banned? Read more about Yoga. Read only .......... don't practise first. I once heard that yoga was done as preparation for praying to a Hindu god.

Will the Christian and Buddhist communities be pressured into issuing similar decree too?

Yoga, initiated by the Hindus long ago. But now, Yoga is merely a form of physical exercise to loosen up your body as well as to make you feel better. One comment i had in my blog says that when you do Yoga, you have to say "Umm" (chanting sound), which I think is not true anymore. Well, even if it was really a "Umm", no mantras are recited or else Muslims, Buddhists and Christians who practise it would run away long ago. I suppose the humming sound is meant to calm the mind - which is a good thing.

Let's be more like the Sultan of Selangor - ponder and decide. We can, if we want to, and if we're trained to do so.
