Breathing in Polluted Air

I still do exercise regularly but did stop jogging due to the polluted air. People are still jogging around my housing area. Why did I stop? Upon reading "Air pollution holds risks for athletes who exercise outdoors - IHT", I fully agree with it.

Did hear from health concious people that we should jog right early in the morning. Oh no. I like to sleep a lot and waking up at 6am is definitely way too hard. Why can't we jog in the evening? They said that the dust or dirt would settling down and thus we would be breathing it in. Is the air fresher and cleaner in the wee hours of morning? Air pollution is one of the major concern.

Maybe that was the reason why there were so many fitness centres mushrooming in Kuala Lumpur. People tend to exercise indoor to lessen inhaling the polluted air. Received a call yesterday from California Fitness in Mid Valley that I could join them for a 14 days free trial. When should I start? There is always this thought of joining a gym but California Fitness is still a bit inconvenient. But somehow there is a bad report from a member within.

I have got choices as well in choosing a fitness centre. At my office building, there are Gold's Gym in Plaza Ampang and Clark Hatch in Crown Princess Hotel. A few of my colleagues would drop in for their gym routines at 7.30am before reporting at work by 8.30am. Some would go after work.

There is a gym room in my condo compound but the equipments are not sufficient/complete. Another fitness centre within walking distance from the condo, Impressive Fitness, looks quite impressive. Buy my own weights?

Really want to look fit. Meantime, only way of keeping fit is to swim regularly at the condo pool.

Change of Singapore's Hospitals' Names

Do you know why New Changi Hospital (NCH) changed its name to Changi General Hospital (CGH)?

Because NCH stands for "Never Come Home". That's why business was very bad before it changed its name. Now CGH stands for "Can Go Home". So business is picking up.

Business in Singapore General Hospital (SGH) is still going strong because SGH stands for "Sure Go Home"!

Now National University Hospital (NUH) is also considering a name change. It stands for "No Use Hospital"!

What about Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH). Not too good a name, no wonder so much problem. It stands for " Tiam Tiam Si Hospital " (Die quietly) and now ' Tan Teo SARs Hospital " (Waiting for SARS disease).

So, be careful of choosing which hospital to go if anyone is unwell.

One Billion To Die Due to Tobacco

World Health Organization has stated that one billion people will die by the end of this century due to tobacco-related diseases.

Not frigthening enough? It may be you OR may not be you but the person next to you OR one of your family members. 1 billion divided by 6 billion people on the face of the earth now = staggering 16%. Every 6 persons, 1 will die.

By the way, it's already killing 5.4 million people every year.

Malaysian government did its part by raising the sin tax on cigarettes, a 25% increase in excise duty. A good way to obtain government revenue. In a way, it may deter people from burning their health away in a slow way. Sad scenario in Malaysia is when tax increases, smugglings increased to avoid paying such tax.

Singapore has banned patrons from lighting up in pubs, nightclubs, karaoke lounge ........ for 99% of the patrons "where else can we smoke in Singapore?"......

Discovery of New Medicine

World Health Organization, PATH and Serum Institute of India Limited have jointly developed a new vaccine for meningitis A, considered as the deadly virus that could kill a person within hours. This new vaccine is extremely welcomed for meningitis hotspots in India and Africa.

I can vouch for that as I have at least 4 different kinds of jabs for my working trip to Sudan. What do I have? Meningitis (can't remember whether it's for A or Z), Typhoid, Yellow Fever and Hepatitis (was it A or B that I have been vaccined against?).

There is a yellow book which I have to carry around when I'm travelling abroad. It's like a register book showing what type of vaccination that I have in my body and date of vaccination taken. Certain countries, at the gate of entry to their country, may ask for your yellow book if they noticed (in your passport) that you have travelled to Africa before.

If you didn't bring it along, you could be sent back to your country on the first flight out or the worst could happen, they will quarantine you in their medical centre - segregated faraway in a room....... hehehe....don't mind if I got deported back to Malaysia when I arrived at Sudan but sadly they don't worry on that.....

Bird Flu Near Kuala Lumpur!!!

It's true, the H5N1 bird flu virus has hit a village in Sungai Buloh, quite near to Kuala Lumpur. Dozens of chicken were dead. Will other villagers who rear chicken for a living sneak out their chicken elsewhere?

Will it cause panic in the city of Kuala Lumpur? Will the government keep the public well informed?

Top 6 Fitness Myths and Truths

There are several common misconceptions about exercise and weight loss, but don’t let yourself be fooled! Here are the Top 6 Fitness Myths and the Truths that debunk them:-

Myth #1: You can take weight off of specific body parts by doing exercises that target those areas.
Truth: This concept is called "spot training" and unfortunately, it doesn’t burn fat. When you lose weight, you are unable to choose the area in which the reduction will occur. Your body predetermines which fat stores it will use. For example, doing sit-ups will strengthen you abs but will not take the fat off of your stomach. Similarly, an activity like running burns fat all over your body, not just your legs. You can, however, compliment a balanced exercise program with a selection of weight training exercises to gradually lose weight and tone the body.

Myth #2: Women who lift weights will bulk up.
Truth: While on a weight lifting program, the right hormones (testosterone) are necessary in order to bulk up. Women’s testosterone levels are much lower than men’s, so in most cases, they are not capable of building large muscles. In fact, since muscle takes up less room than fat, women tend to lose inches when they strength train. So in addition to the physical benefits (increased metabolism, decreased risk of osteoporosis, increased strength), strength training will help you slim down too!

Myth #3: If you can’t exercise hard and often, there’s really no point.
Truth: Even moderate activity is shown to reduce your risk for heart disease and stroke. If you don’t have 30 minutes in your day to exercise, try splitting it up into 10-minute segments instead. Everyone can find 10 minutes to spare sometime during the day! There are simple things you can do to increase your activity without having to go to the gym: take the stairs instead of the elevator, jump rope or do body weight exercises (push ups, crunches) at commercial breaks, take a short walk after lunch. Remember that any exercise is better than none!

Myth #4: Performing abdominal exercises will give you a flat stomach.
Truth: This is similar to Myth #1 above. The fact is, the only way to get a flat stomach is to strip away the fat around the midsection. This is accomplished by doing cardio/aerobic exercise (to burn calories), strength training (to increase metabolism) and following a proper diet. Abdominal exercises will help to build muscle in your midsection, but you will never see the muscle definition unless the fat in this area is stripped away.

Myth #5: You will burn more fat if you exercise longer at a lower intensity.
Truth: The most important factor in exercise and weight control is not the percentage of fat calories burned, but the total calories burned during the activity. The faster you walk, bike or swim, for example, the more calories you use per minute. Although you will be burning fewer "fat calories", you will be burning more total calories, and in turn, will lose more weight.

Myth #6: No pain, no gain!
Truth: Exercise should not be painful! At the height of your workout, you should be sweating and breathing hard. You should not be so out of breath that you cannot answer a question, but should not be so comfortable that you can carry on a full conversation. That’s how you know you are working at a good level. It’s important to distinguish between muscle fatigue (feeling "the burn") and muscle/joint pain (sharp and uncomfortable pain during movement). Pain is your body’s way of telling you that you’re doing something wrong. Listen to your body. If it’s painful, stop!

If you don’t understand something or question the source, ask a qualified fitness professional for their advice. Sticking to the truths of these myths will keep you healthy, injury-free, and on track to meeting your fitness goals. [Author: Jen Mueller (M.Ed. in Health Promotion) & a certified personal trainer]

Free Cocaine / Marijuana

By reading that title, don't be shocked thinking that I became a drug pusher. Was also thinking just now, if I blogged about this will I be construed as promoting it. nah..........continue reading....

You can't find those drugs here anyway but faraway. For your safety, if you have booked for a holiday going to Rome, Taranto (both in Italy) or Algiers (capital city of Algeria), please re-consider changing your venue.

Italy's National Research Council or in italian, Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche ("CNR") has done a research at the 3 mentioned cities and found that Rome's atmosphere has a cocaine presence of approximately 0.1 nanogramme (1 nanogramme is one billionth of a gramme) per cubic metre during winter months. On long term basis, it's bad for public health. How come this could happen?

CNR has played down the people's assumption that the 3 cities have a high rate of drugs intake. Then it must be those Mafia fellas who has polluted those 3 cities with their drugs being sold/distributed widely there.........no need to buy now, free sniffing........

Consumer Healthcare

GlaxoSmithKline Malaysia has assured the public that Ribena's content is as per its label via an official statement to Amir Mahmood Razak, a TV news anchor who enquired about it when he read about the case in New Zealand. The statement came about due to GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare in New Zealand (GSK-CH) who has accepted charges brought by the New Zealand Commerce Commission and has given undertakings to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission with regards to potentially misleading advertising statements and low levels of Vitamin C in some Ribena Ready-to-Drink products manufactured for the Australia and New Zealand markets.

More in Amir Mahmood Razak's blog and Screenshots.

Has the food/beverage production been compromised lately? Which 3rd party can verify the truthfulness on the label or those contect not listed in label to avoid consumer repercussion.

In China, two young men from Hangzhou, provincial capital of Zhejiang in eastern China, sued the Zhongcui Foodstuff Co Ltd for producing and putting on the market Coca-Cola and Sprite drinks containing the preservative sodium benzoate, which has been proved to be harmful to human health when consumed over a long period. The plaintiffs accused the manufacturers of covering up the preservative's chemical nature, thus depriving the consumer of "the right to know". The case is reported to have been accepted by a court. (source: Asia Times Onlime)

Is it the same situation in Malaysia as well? What does Malaysia's Coca Cola producer, F&N Coca-Cola, has to say about the situation in China. Personally, I do refrain from drinking carbonated soft drinks.

Infant Massage?

An article in the Star newspaper today entitled "Miracle baby is two years old" stated that infant massage that was practised by the mother on the little baby when her chance of survival was slim encouraged the baby to grow healthily.

I met a medical doctor on Sunday who had been practising for the last few decades. He said that this new development has not been taught before in medical stream. And he said jokingly that in future, people will develop a new technique called "unborn baby massage". I think it may materialise as well as the Medicinenet's website has a topic on Bonding With Baby Before Birth already.

From the Childbirth's website on What Is Infant Massage?, what has been explained was infant massage was related to touching by the parents that would generate bonding which aids growth and development. So, it's no big deal after all. Every parents have been doing that all this while.

But the International Association of Infant Massage has developed a course to produce Certified Infant Massage Instructors that will train parents and caregivers to massage their babies.

Is this Infant Massage a new medical breakthrough or some practise being commercialised to a larger extent throughout the whole world now?

Free Travel!!!

It's something for you to read only & not so much of an offer available somewhere for your taking.

But if you are poor enough and managed to get a last minute Venezuelan citizenship, you could still get a chance to travel for free provided you are sick at the same time. The Venezuelan President, Hugo Chavez, has approved tentatively with the Cuban government in sending 100,000 poor Venezuelans who require medical attention. Cuban doctors in various medical fields will be ready to provide the medical services required. (source: Granma International)

What a nice president. And I'm sure they are real hard core poor people instead of related parties or cronies riding along the trip in getting FREE stuff. Surely no discrimination on which race will have more people or fixing any quota on other races.

U.S. Chicken Unsafe

After blogging about KFC's chicken on 12 Nov 2006, a consumer group in USA has reported publicly that 83% of chicken sold in U.S. grocery stores may contain bacteria that cause foodborne illnesses, 34% points higher than the rate it found 3 years ago.

Consumers Union's Consumer Reports said tests on 525 chickens -- including samples from leading brands Perdue, Pilgrim's Pride Inc. and Tyson Foods Inc. -- showed most of the poultry had campylobacter or salmonella, two of the leading causes of food-borne diseases. Campylobacter bacteria, which can be carried by birds without them becoming ill, but causes diarrhea in people. Salmonella, which causes diarrhea, headache and fever in most people, is one of the most frequently reported causes of food-borne illness in the United States.

The National Chicken Council said the report contained nothing new and "greatly exaggerated" the rate of bacteria in raw chicken. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention estimated the two bacteria, which can be spread through other avenues in addition to chicken, cause millions of illnesses and 700 fatalities annually. U.S. Agriculture Department's Food Safety and Inspection Service said the study was riddled with flaws such as a small sample size and uncertainty over the report's methodology. Who is correct? Asia Spa and Wellness Festival 2006

Asia Spa and Wellness Festival 2006 celebrates the best of Asian spas and wellness centers. The Festival comprises a trade exhibition, an industry summit and the inaugural Malaysia Spa and Wellness Awards. The 3-day exhibition is designed as a spa village, highlighting new products, trends and technologies, as well as selected spas and wellness centers across Asia.
Spa and Wellness are gaining unprecedented growth and popularity across Asia. Spurred by a global trend of faster and relatively more affordable air travel, and a busier, more hectic corporate lifestyle - spas and wellness centers are here to stay. Recognizing the need for a regional event to further propel the growth of the industry, Kuala Lumpur will play host to the inaugural Asia Spa and Wellness Festival 2006 is, from 1st - 3rd December 2006 at the Mid Valley Exhibtion Centre.

If you want to know more info about those high class spa centres, you can refer to my previous post on Malaysian Spa Culture (6 Nov) where I have listed top 20 spa resorts in Malaysia.

World Aids Day

World AIDS Day, 1 December is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV and AIDS. This year, it's up to you, me and us to stop the spread of HIV and end prejudice.
HIV/Aids is having a crippling effect on the workforce of many countries, a report by the International Labour Organization for World Aids Day says.

The ILO said HIV/Aids killed almost 3.5 million people of working age in 2005.

World Toilet Day 2006

yeah it's today and you are not supposed to use the toilet on the auspicious day....hahaha

well, i supposed the special day was organised to bring awareness on the importance of hygiene in toilet whether public or private (more so public). The organisation bringing such things up is 'flushed' with ideas on sanitation.
World Toilet Organisation (WTO - don't get mixed up with World Trade Organisation) has just organised a ........
World Toilet Expo & Forum 2006, from 16-18 November 2006 in Bangkok, Thailand.
Next in line is the World Toilet Summit & Expo 2006 which is being held by the Russian Toilet Association in Moscow, Russia today itself to discuss on topics listed here (source: Poop Report).

This is big shitty business, may I say. If you think you are hygienic enough, try this Game and see how you fare in toilet cleanliness.

Rare Implant

I blogged about 20-yr-old Yvonne Foong on 20 Aug 2006 about her rare form of neurofibromatosis illness. The Star has reported that Yvonne has raised her own funds (up to RM230,000) to treat her genetically incurable disease and became the first Malaysian to have an auditory brainstem implant (ABI). The surgery was led by Dr. Rick A. Friedman, a medical specialist in this field.

Her 4 Nov surgery in Los Angeles was the fourth major one she had undergone since she was diagnosed with NF2 at the age of 13. However, instead of giving up on life or asking for handouts, she has worked hard to raise money for her operation by selling T-shirts, organising rock concerts, giving motivational talks and writing a book about living with NF titled I Am Not Sick, Just A Bit Unwell.

True grit won her the Asian Youth Ambassadors’ Most Outstanding Youth of the Year award in 2005.

Meanwhile, her townsfolk in Subang Jaya have started a fund-raising campaign for Yvonne and will hold their third charity golf tournament in her aid. They have collected RM16,000 so far which would help meet Yvonne’s surgery expenses and also follow-up treatment in Los Angeles.
As I always said and will say again & again; A Person With A Dream Can Never Be Denied!

Medical Meccas

Bumrungrad International Hospital (left pic) in Bangkok, Asia's first internationally accredited hospital and one of the most modern and efficient medical facilities in the world. Last year the hospital treated 400,000 foreign patients—the highest of any hospital in the world—from more than 150 countries, for everything from heart disease to hip replacements to breast implants. The attraction: world-class medicine at developing-world prices. And patients get velvet-glove treatment redolent of a five-star hotel and limousine pick-ups from airport. (source: Newsweek)
