Broga Hill Climb I

Broga Hill, here I come to conquer. Went with my youth group (I think it was 24 of us). This hill is located somewhere in Semenyih. Don't ask me where but we drove on the Cheras - Kajang highway and reached this destination.

We reached the foothill by 5.15am and I thought we were early. There were a number of motor vehicles before our three vans. The place is total darkness if you off your torchlight. We started our ascend immediately to catch the sunrise. The bad thing was a drizzle happened earlier and the climb was made harder with all the slippery ground.

My friend said those were the panther's eyes ..... phew, I thought it was a tiger.

The early morning scene where many people are still dreaming at their best.

That's it, I'm almost up there until one of the youth told me that's only Level 1.

How many levels are there? Four!

Almost fainted. Moral of the story - ask for details before you join the climb next time.

As I was accompanying two other youth who were not fit way behind, I could see light by the time I arrived at Level 1.

The scenery at Level 1.

We continued our climb up to Level 2.

At Level 3, you are supposed to climb this rock up to Level 4. There was a rope for you to pull yourself up.

Hmmmmmmm pulling my whole body up? Hopefully I don't fall back.

This is Level 4, the peak of Broga Hill or Bukit Broga. There was so little space and people are everywhere. No space to walk.

At this point of time, one of the youth asked me this question - "Uncle, are you involved in sports?"

I answered "Yeah, why?"

Youth continued "No wonder and I can see that you are quite fit in reaching the peak. Those in the middle age and above may find it hard to climb at all"

So, was that a compliment?

Broga Hill Climb II

My proof for being up in Bukit Broga. What a tiring effort.

When it was time to descend, we were in the traffic jam at the rope climbing part.

You just have to follow the crowd as you descend unless you decide to roll down.

What a scenery.

The descend back to Level 1's peak.

My best take for the photo. Managed to capture the mist hovering amongst the hilly range. This picture made me hunger for a proper DSLR.

The real descend. One of the youth fell twice and another has a leg cramp.

Me? Reached the foothill safely.

This is where we rested and had our breakfast in Semenyih town. This Kang Master Chef Restaurant was situated nearby the Semenyih Sentral.

Tycoons Serving As 'Air Stewardess'

At the rate of what's going on in Formula 1, I don't think we'll be able to see either Datuk Tony Fernandes or Sir Richard Branson serving as a "stewardess" in an airplane.

At the start of the Formula 1, two tycoons each being the owner of a low cost carrier and also a Formula 1 team respectively, had a friendly bet that whichever racing team is placed below another, the losing team's chief shall serve as a "stewardess" in the winner's airplane.

Datuk Tony Fernandes is the CEO of AirAsia (having won the world's best low cost airline, one up on Richard Branson already) and the principal of the Lotus-Cosworth Formula 1 racing team.

Sir Richard Branson owns both the Virgin Atlantic Airways and the Virgin-Cosworth Formula 1 racing team.

Both of them has a blog on their own too written under the blog names of Tony Fernandes CEO Blog and Richard's Blog respectively.

This picture was extracted from Sun newspaper where it shows Richard Branson's face in a 'stewardess' body serving in an AirAsia's airplane.

Still searching for a picture showing Tony Fernandes in Virgin Atlantic Airways's costume hehe.

At this point of time, both Lotus-Cosworth and Virgin-Cosworth haven't obtained a single point in this year's Formula 1. Will both end up not securing a single point at the end of the season?

But I don't think the words "Coffee, Tea Or Me?" works for them .....

One thing that baffles me a lot is why Lotus-Cosworth racing team didn't obtain their engines from Lotus itself.

I understand about Virgin going for Cosworth's engines as they don't come from the motor industry. But Lotus????????? A car manufacturer that can't even supply its engines for a Formula 1 racing team that is racing under Lotus's name?????? That's really funny.

Being as rich as them, it's fun at times when they get to invest their hard earned monies in areas of their interests/hobbies.

Just like the rich and famous who are buying up the English Premier League teams in England. The Sheikh owner of Manchester City is just throwing his tons of monies into the game as if he was playing the Fantasy Football Manager game.

Paintball to be Outlawed?

I have at least two or three friends who are really into the paintball game. I have tried it once albeit a lame one hahahaha. We were supplied with water pump guns only. It was a large area catered for their so called war games at a beach resort located at Rompin/Lanjut beach area.

That was my only exposure to it. The closest I have ever been near it is witnessing the people playing the game itself near my place of stay.

Gathered from my friends that this game is really expensive and you could spend a minimum of RM100 per game which also depends on how long you intend to play.

I would say that the game is still new in Malaysia and that it's too expensive to reach the mass.

For Germans, they better play the game fast as they may not be able to get their hands on those high adrenalin pressured guns in time to come. The German government is proposing that the paintball be banned in Germany.

Why? Reason - simulate killing on the grounds that they trivialise and encourage violence.

Recent shootings in Germany caused many innocents to be killed. The ease of obtaining guns / weapons has prompted such call for a ban that may even include paintball.

Lawn Bowl Team Facing Problems

We have heard that Malaysia's football and hockey teams are not having fit players prior to important matches and thus the poor team results.

In the Malaysian lawn bowl team, it's totally different altogether. In the team, both Siti Zalina Ahmad while Norhashimah Ismail, have been suspended for 18 months and 12 months respectively by their Malaysian Lawn Bowls Federation ("MLBF").

Reasons given for their suspensions:-
* Siti Zalina Ahmad - alleged misconduct while undergoing training at the Bukit Kiara training centre here on 26 Oct where she was alleged to have got into a fight with another member of the team, attacked a MLBF official and refused to follow instructions from the coach.

Medals won / honours:-
- singles gold medal @ 1998 Commonwealth Games
- a singles and pairs gold @ 2008 Asian Lawn Bowls Championships
- Malaysian Olympian of the Year in 2002

- short listed for the 2008 Malaysian Sportswoman of the Year Award

* Norhashimah Ismail - allegedly failing to stop the fight and not acting as the captain of the women’s national team.

Medals won / honours:-
- team gold @ 2006 Commonwealth Games
- consecutive wins @ Asian Lawn Bowls Championships since 2001

But both players cried foul over their suspensions. Reasons for crying foul - she claimed that the real reasons for the action was because an official in MLBF was unhappy that she would not entertain that person’s request to “fix” a match to allow another player win a championship last year.

That's a serious allegation but till todate, MLBF or its officials has not responded to this allegation. Suspending the team captain for failing to stop a fight? First hearing such suspension. What were the other officials doing then? Only one official at that point of time? What about other coaching staff? No one else was there?

Here you have top quality players who have medals from top competitions and who are ready to play for the country ............. unfortunately such things happened. Are the two players telling the truth?

It doesn't stop there. Kamarul Aizad Othman, another lawn bowl player, has decided to quit the national team. Reason - feeling despaired by the action of a majority of MLBF officers and came forward to expose this to help my friends who had been victimised by a MLBF officer.

Medals won:-
- gold medal @ 2003 Asian Cup championship

My My ............... more to come ......

Another former national athlete, who requested not to be identified, claimed that he was also victimised by the officer and was forced to leave the national squad. "I have never sent a letter asking to leave the national squad, but the officer informed the MLBF president that I did," he said, adding that he did lodge a report with the federation, but no action was taken.

And hopefully this is the last from the lawn bowl national squad ........

A former athlete in the back-up squad, Noorazwin Ibrahim, claimed that the officer had forced her to "sell" a game during the 2006 Champion of Champions. She said she lodged a report on the matter with the NSC, but no action was taken against the officer.

I salute you, Kamarul Aizad Othman, for standing up for your friends!

Main Cause of Hockey & Soccer Downfall

Malaysia's football and hockey teams were a major force to be reckoned with in the 1970s and 1980s (in Asia). Malaysia could beat teams coming from South Korea, Japan or the Middle East nations. Come to the 1990s, we have seen slight deterioration in their performances.

Today, the teams that we trash in those yesteryears are right at the top of the game and beating us every now and then.

Where was Vietnam in the 1970s? They were just recovering from their war against the USA and today, their football team is the champion of South East Asia.

In Malaysia's match against the United Arab Emirates for the 2011 Asian Cup qualifying stage, only three pathetic players were declared fit for the match. The rest? What were they doing? What sort of training did they go through? How are you going to play three against eleven? We lost 5-0!

Our deplorable football team is ranked 161st in the FIFA ranking (as at today). Really sad! I have even heard a comment stating that too much of televised English Premier League matches in our TV channels actually stopped many Malaysians from having interests in supporting local Malaysian teams. What an excuse!!!! Instead of coming up with better ideas to improve it, excellent excuses were thought of.

The upper echelon of the national football team management has to be responsible for the dismay but the national football coach has been blamed by the management instead. The players that the coach could select were from state teams that are not managed well enough. How do you expect the coach to have a strong team then? Even the former national players blame the Football Association of Malaysia for the state of the national football team.

Not only football, even our national hockey is in the same predicament. What's happening here? The hockey team is preparing for the upcoming Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in April 2009 and went through a fitness test. Unfortunately, only nine passed the fitness test conducted by the National Sports Institute. So much for the millions poured into the sports ............ or was it poured elsewhere that we didn't know about it? Otherwise, how could such things happen.

The Pakistan and India teams feared the Malaysian hockey team in those years ....... now? They could be heard asking "Who's Malaysia?".

I don't think I'm allowed to question the upper echelon who's in charge of the respective national football and hockey teams as I could be charged for treason or sedition under weird Malaysian laws.

We are not asking Malaysia to win the World Cup in both sports as even though there are no mutu, show me some gaya at least (of which I can't see it also).

Pornography and Violence in Paralympics

After the staging the successful Beijing Oylmpics last month, China is also hosting the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games.

During the opening ceremony of the Paralympics, a lady spectator jumped onto the tracks and ran towards the Russian athletes who were parading. Was she a Georgian national?
Not wanting any embarrasing moments, the stadium officials caught up with her, whom they claimed was a mental patient who ran amok. It was not easy in handling her.
The rest of the people who were involved in the opening ceremony were professional enough to continue with what they were supposed to do, not letting the pornographic and violence scenario behind them to affect their performances.

I'm wondering whether our Malaysian Paralympics athletes will receive the same accolades like Lee Chong Wei if they were to win any medals. It's still a world meet event.

Aftermath of Beijing Olympics

If China does not apply to host the Olympics, they say that the European and American countries are rich and strong and they apply regularly, whereas poor China can only watch from the sidelines.

If China applies to host the Olympics but loses out, they say that China should be embarrassed for applying when it is unqualified.

If China applies to host the Olympics and wins the bid, they say that China should be embarrassed for expending its national resources on an image project.

If the opening ceremony in China is not good, they say that the director is lousy and the Chinese people are of poor quality.

If the opening ceremony in China turns out to be good, they say that billions of dollars were wasted.

If China runs the Olympics frugally, they say that the Chinese government is embarrassing the nation in front of the world by running the Olympics when it cannot afford to.

If China runs the Olympics lavishly, they say that the Chinese government is wasting taxpayers' money on the Olympics.

If we don't understand the opening ceremony in a foreign country, they say that we don't understand other people's culture.
If we understand the opening ceremony in a foreign country, they say that the foreign culture is just too grand and unversal.
If foreigners don't understand the opening ceremony in China, they say that we are uncultured.
If foreigners understand the opening ceremony in China, they say that it must have been too shallow and superficial.

Before the Olympics, they say that China won't get a lot of gold medals because the Chinese athletes are inferior to the Europeans and Americans.
If China gets too few gold medals, they say that China is a weak sports nation with frail people, whereas the Europeans and Americans have fine people who win plenty of gold.
If China gets too many gold medals, they say that it is due to a distorted system of sports administration and it does not prove that China or its people are strong.

If foreign athletes game the rules, they say that it is smartness.
If foreign athletes do not game the rules, they say that it is strength.
If Chinese athletes game the rules, they say that China is sly.
If Chinese athletes do not game the rules, they say that China is very stupid.

If a foreign nation wins many medals in a sport, they say that the foreign athletes are gifted and strong.
If China wins many medals in a story, they say that this is against the spirit of the games and the sports ought to be eliminated from the Olympics.

If a foreign nation does not administer/manage sports, they say that developed countries do not do that.
If China does not administer/manage sports, they say that China is backwards for not doing that.

If foreign athletes pay for their own training, they say that this shows the sporting spirit without spending taxpayers' money.
If Chinese athletes pay for their own training, they say that China does not value sports.

If a foreign nation wins only one gold medal, they say that it is just a gold medal which does not really matter.
If China wins only one gold medal, they ask how can China win only one gold when it has a population of 1.3 billion?

If a foreign athlete makes a basic mistake, they say that the spirit of sports is about participation and losers can still enjoy the Olympics.
If a Chinese athlete makes a basic mistake, they say that the pressure was too big and Chinese athletes are not mentally ready.

If a foreign athlete cries after winning a medal, they say that this is a genuine expression of the Olympic spirit.
If a Chinese athlete cries after winning a medal, they say that it is the result of the over-emphasis on winning medals.

If the foreign athlete is a university student, they say that this is an amateur as distinct from the professional Chinese athletes.
If a Chinese athlete is a university student, they say that someone should not be allowed to attend university because of sporting talents.

If a foreign athlete makes a TV ad, they say that this is a commercial activity which funds the training.
If a Chinese athlete makes a TV ad, they wonder how can any good results be achieved when money is the most important factor?

If China wins too few gold medals, they say that China is not good enough.
If China wins too many gold medals, they say wonder what gold medals are good for and they want the money to be given to socially vulnerable groups.
If China wins too many gold medals, they say that the ranking should be based upon the total number of all medals because that is the true reflection of the sporting level.
If China leads in count of total medals, they say that the ranking should be based upon the number of medals per capital because that is the true reflection of sporting level among the people.
If China leads in number of medals per capital, they say that China has a national sports system and therefore China should be embarrassed to compare itself against amateur athletes.

In the end, China got the most number of gold medals. They say, "What good is that to me? I am not getting a pay raise or a new house as a result."

You just cannot please everyone.

A Christian for the Ages

One of my all time favorite movies with a Christian theme is the 1981 film entitled 'Chariots of Fire' a story about two runners, one a Jewish Englishman named Harold Abrams, one a Scottish Evangelical named Eric Liddle who both did remarkable things at the 1924 Olympics in Paris. NBC and Mary Carillo this afternoon did a wonderful tribute to Liddle, which if you can find on their website you should watch it. What Carillo rightly points out, is that Liddle was the first athlete born in China (of missionary parents in 1902) to win a gold medal at any Olympics.

Eric Liddle lived a short life (1902-45), but the importance of a life cannot be measured in its quantity, rather it must be measured in its quality, and as Carillo movingly said, "most athletes come to the games desiring to be great and do great, Eric Liddle came to the Paris Olympics desiring to be good, and to do good." Liddle famously refused to run in the race that was his speciality because the heat was on Sunday, and he was a strict Scottish sabbitarian. Even the pleas from the royal family went on deaf ears. This was a great blow to Britain recovering from WWI as Liddle was undoubtedly the best in the world in 100M. But his old rival whom he had beaten in that very distance before, Harold Abrams, ran and won the race for Great Britain. Liddle however was persuaded to run the 400 meters. As his daughter Patrica Russell tells the story, the thing was he ran it as if it was the 100 meters. He ran it like an all out sprint, smashing the world record, winning by a comfortable margin. There is a famous line in the movie 'Chariots of Fire' where Eric's sister is arguing with him about his going to Paris instead of going instantly to the mission field in China. Eric's response was memorable, "God has made me to be a missionary, aye, but he has made me fast, and when I run, I feel God's pleasure". I know exactly what he means, having been a runner most of my life. When I ran the Boston Marathon in 1993 on an unusually hot muggy day in April, I came down to the last few miles on fumes, and kept saying to myself "are you running with me Jesus", "are you running with me".

Eric Liddle after the Paris Olympics did return to the country of his birth, China, where he was a missionary. Unfortunately, China was invaded by Japan, and Liddle had to send his family home to Canada (his wife was Canadian), and he himself ended up in a concentration camp with many others 300 miles south of Beijing. In the camp he pastored and taught and loved his fellow inmates. In the Carillo piece, one of the interees said that Liddle taught him that he must pray for the Japanese who had done this to them, for the NT says 'pray for those who persecute you'. Liddle was a genuinely Christian person from start to finish in his 43 years of life. Only six months before the liberation of China by the Allies in 1945, Eric Liddle became suddenly ill, and then died. He had a massive brain tumor. To this day, the Chinese do not erect monuments to foreigners on their soil, but they made an exception for an exceptional man who called two nations his home. Still today you can see the monument erected with an English script and a cross on it honoring Eric Liddle for his good work in China.

Though what Michael Phelps accomplished at this Olympics will long redound to his glory, what Eric Liddle did both at the 1924 Olympics and throughout his life will redound to God's glory, and, as those bonny Scots would say, "that's more than a wee bit greater."

Confusing Olympics Medal Standing

The Beijing 2008 Olympic Games is heating up in many sports arenas throughout a few cities in China. No doubt that we can see from the total number of athletes' participation that both USA and China would be going all out in their respective sports to compete for the number one position in the medal standing.

Who would dare to bet against China in not getting the number one position for the first time in Olympics history by looking at the current medal standing. But USA is catching up and with their athletics taking up positions in the track and fields' events, surely they will threaten China's current number one position.

But what am I talking about? What catching up with China? In Fox Sports, USA is already shown as the number one nation in the medal standing. Fox Sports took into consideration the total number of medals won (be it gold or silver or bronze). Fox Sports-shares owned by USA interests-obvious!

When you read the official Beijing 2008 website, the medal standing showed otherwise where China is the top nation. Obviously, this website is maintained by China web administrators.Which medal standing do you support?

For me, I'll adopt the medal standing which rates the nations according to their number of gold medals first. There are 302 gold medals to be won. Imagine USA was to win all the 302 golds and China won the rest of the 604 silvers and bronzes, will China be accepted as the number one in the medal standing?

Beijing 2008 Olympic Games

The opening ceremony of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games - astounding and exhilarating. Beyond words to describe its unique showcase. With their humonguous population, China is able to prepare itself for one of the best Olympic Games in history.

Indeed, the theme itself "One World One Dream" will spur many athletics to live their dreams by winning their events.
Even though, I'm in Sudan at the moment, was glad that our TV satellite subscription didn't disappoint us. What more can I do on a weekend in Sudan.

The Olympics will be on for the next sixteen days up to 24 August 2008. Google's website changed its logo for the day to commemorate the opening event too.
The opening ceremony began at an auspicious timing today, on 8.8.08 at 8.08:08pm. The meaning of numeric 8 to chinese is huge. It could mean properity, success or considered a lucky number in chinese culture.

In Malaysia, when we see a car number plate which has the digit 8 or 88 or 888 or 8888 (max of 4 digits) on it, we are very sure that it belongs to a chinese.

Lifetime Beer Supply for a Goal

An Austrian brewery company, Ottakringer Brauerei AG ("OBAG") , in motivating and hoping that it will spur their beer drinking football players, has offered this - lifetime beer supply if you score a goal in the Euro 2008.

The Austrian players must salivating over this extraordinaire support provided by the brewery company. May have a problem though. Every single Austrian players could be rushing towards goal. Does an own goal count?

Ivica Vastic has gotten the supply now since he scored a last minute penalty against Poland last night. Fantastic mate! OBAG's Chief Executive, Sigi Menz, said that he will personally send the first year's supply to the respective players(s). One more game to go against Germany and who else will join Ivica Vastic.

Yeah, only one more as I don't expect them to advance from the group stage. Next time then.

Olympic Torch Relay in Malaysia

With all the havoc being created during those Olympic torch relays held at Paris, London, San Francisco and India, the Malaysian government has to prepare themselves for any unwanted situation on 21 Apr 2008, Monday afternoon.

Last Friday, a group of Falun Gong followers did a protest just right outside of the China Embassy in Kuala Lumpur.

In view of this, the Royal Malaysian Police has set up a special police action squad to prevent the Anti-China, Falun Gong and Tibetan sympathisers or anyone for that matter from interferring in the Olympic torch relay.

Well, certain / surrounding roads would be close to motor vehicles to accommodate the torch relay from 2.15pm to 6.15pm and if you are having any appointments at this few areas, do re-adjust your timing:-
* Dataran Merdeka (starting point)
* Wisma OCM
* City Hall
* Parliament House
* National Museum
* National Mosque
* Old Railway Station
* Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall
* Merdeka Stadium
* KL Tower
* KLCC (finale)

When the road is closed to motor vehicles, it's much more easier to target you (if you are one of those intending to disrupt the Olympic torch relay).

The police has warned that stern action would be taken against any disruption and any vehicles parked along the scheduled roads would be towed away for security reasons. What security reasons you may ask - Car Bombs la!

Golfer's Ball Used as Murder Weapon

A pro golfer by the name of John Henry Isenhour III could be charged for killing a hawk with a golf ball. Not that he was holding on to the golf ball and hit the hawk with the golf ball. He actually hit the golf ball with his golf club and it struck the hawk bulls-eye.

John was upset with the hawk for making noise during one of his golf instruction video shoot and when it landed 300 yards away on the golf course, he aimed a few shots at it. The hawk flew away but landed on the golf course again, 75 yards away this time. John took aim at this hawk with few more shots.

One in a million as quoted when his golf ball hit the hawk and it got murdered right on the spot.

That action caught the attention of the Humane Society of the United States that submitted a complain to the PGA Tour commissioner and he lost his practice privileges at Grand Cypress Golf Resort, the place he murdered the hawk. He had apologised since then. What a day!

Football Referee Pulls Out Gun

I was quite shocked with the five red cards being shown in nine English Premier League matches that played on Boxing Day, 26 Dec 2007 especially the Chelsea vs. Aston Villa match that contributed three red cards.

But then it can never topple the incident in Batu Pahat, a district in the state of Johore, Malaysia. A referee had red carded a player from the Kampung Bumiputera FC just 5 minutes into the second half in a match against Rejosari for the Rengit State Assembly Open Cup. The players from Kampung Bumiputera and their fans were not happy with the red card stomped their way to the front of the referee.

Fearing for his life, the referee ran and they chased. Upon reaching his car, mind you a police car, he reached for his gun and fired into the air. This is to show that he, as the referee, is in control and his decision is final .................... haha. He's a certified football referee by the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) but I guess not anymore.

But it's not that funny anymore for five players from Kampung Bumiputera who have been detained under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting. The policeman, attached to the traffic division, has also been detained under Section 39 of the Firearms Act 1960. Usually, an off-duty policeman doesn't carry a gun around.

John Arne Riise's Payslip

Just as I was reading Reds to probe internet leak of Riise's wage slip - Soccernet about Liverpool's John Arne Riise's payslip, an email came in attached with a photo of that same payslip. How co-incidental. He received a gross income of £139,634.62 for the month of Aug 2006 [assuming it was so as the date of that payslip was dated 1 Sept 2006 - of which £120,000 (for monthly salary), £250 (point bonus), £4,000 (appearance) £15,384.62 (2006/07 Champions League salary increase)].

And he paid £55,508.28 under the Pay As You Earn (PAYE) system, a staggering 39.7% of his gross income. Next, I will show Steven Gerrard's payslip............
