Deepest Pool

World's deepest swimming pool with 2 pools, 3 pits (5, 10 and 33m) and 2,500,000 liters of spring water!!! The pool in the picture is for diving instructions and training.

A few years ago, a never-used mine shaft was used for the same purpose, only going to depths of like 400+ meter.............. It was at the site of the never exploited Wilhemina Mines near Roermond / Herkenbosch Netherlands.

Women's World Open Squash Championship

Nicol David, Malaysian squash queen, downs Natalie Grinham to keep world title. The world number one and defending champion succeeded in retaining the women’s World Open squash title at the Ulster Hall in Belfast yesterday.
Nicol won in five games to retain her world title. It was hard work for Nicol as she had to fight back in a dramatic final to become the first Malaysian athlete to win a world championship title for the second consecutive time. Nicol, who became the first Asian player to win the title last year, took 98 minutes to defeat fourth-seeded Australian Natalie Grinham 1-9, 9-7, 3-9, 9-5, 9-2. A1 Grand Prix

A1 Grand Prix is the first opportunity in any area of motorsport for nations to compete on a level playing field. It is a series where technology and innovation are deliberately equalised and performance is determined by human bravery, skill and excellence. A1 Grand Prix is more than just another motorsport phenomenon; it's an entirely new sport - The World Cup of Motorsport. Pitting driver against driver and country against country for the first time in history, A1 Grand Prix will bring together 25 nations representing 80 per cent of the world's population to actively compete on a level playing field.

Today, Malaysia is hosting the 4th race out of a total of 12 races in a season. Malaysia has also sent a team to participate in this A1 GP where the lead driver is Alex Yoong (pic) with Fairuz Fauzy as the 2nd driver, a former Formula 1 driver for the Minardi team back in 2001. He didn't get to acclimatise himself well with the fast speed of Formula 1 and thus, faded out naturally the following year. He got in by virtue of the Malaysian government wanting a driver to represent the country. The government got a local corporate entity to sponsor Minardi with Alex Yoong packaged in. So he was pushed right up to the scale of motorsport when he's not ready for it. Back home, we Malaysians were so ashamed of his results, when you knew how he got into the scene.

Parents Turn Violent During Youth Sports

There was a case that had happened in Philadelphia which I had blogged about it on 24 Oct.
This time at Corpus Christi, Texas, the 5- and 6-year-old athletes were playing with all their hearts in a big championship youth football game. With 10 seconds left on the clock, a coach charged the field and tackled a referee, knocking him unconscious and sparking a raucous brawl. Some parents jumped in to protect their kids, others to protect adults at the bottom of the pile.

Good thing none of the kids was harmed and the police and the district attorney's office are already investigating the case where the coach will be charged for sure.
Peter Roby, Director of Center for the Study of Sport in Society at Northeastern University, said parents are losing perspective on the point of playing sports and are viewing the game through their own eyes, rather than from their child's point of view. (source: CBS News)

World RPS (Rock Paper Scissors)

Think rock, paper, scissors is a children's game? Think again. Top players from around the globe will gather in Toronto this weekend (11 & 12 Nov) to compete for a C$10,000 (4,636 pounds) prize and the title of world champion. More than 500 contestants, including national champions from Australia, Norway and New Zealand, are expected to attend.
Players smack their fists into their palms and count to three before making one of three hand signals: a fist (rock), flat hand (paper) or two fingers (scissors). Paper covers rock, scissors cut paper and rock breaks scissors. Before you think you can participate you may need to know the Advance RPS too.

The Paper Scissors Stone Club was founded in England in 1842 and provided an environment free from the long arm of the law where enthusiasts could come together and play for honour, according to the World RPS (Rock Paper Scissors) Society. I should have concentrated on this simple game (but rewarding now) from day one and aim for the championship annually... tsk tsk... BUT I have to unlearn what I knew as the Malaysia's version is slightly different. Only the rock is the same but we have the bird and water instead of the scissors and paper - a fist (rock), flat hand (water) or five fingers stick together (bird). Rock will sink in water, bird drinks water and rock kills bird. I think I can set-up my own world championship now......

FIFPro Player of the Year

Ronaldinho, the Barcelona star, won the most votes to win the FIFPro Player of the Year from the 43,000 players who were invited to make their vote on the best players of last year. The Brazilian international enjoyed a fantastic season last term helping Barcelona win both La Liga and the UEFA Champions League.

Ronaldinho's Camp Nou team-mate Lionel Messi took ASPIRE Young FIFPro Player Player's Award and that was not the end of the success for Barcelona as Samuel Eto'o was handed the FIFPro Merit Award for his contribution to the sport. Manchester United ace Cristiano Ronaldo claimed the ASPIRE Young Player Fan Award.

Italy's World Cup winning squad dominated the FIFPro Team of the 2005-06 season with four players making the side. Gianluigi Buffon, Fabio Cannavaro, Gianluca Zambrotta and Andrea Pirlo were the four Azzurri players to make the team. World Cup runners-up France had three players in the shape of Zinedine Zidane, Thierry Henry and Lilian Thuram in the team. Chelsea's John Terry, Ronaldinho, Eto'o and Milan's Kaka made up the rest of the team.

Ironman Triathlon

If you are a triathlete, there is no bigger day in this sport than the Ford Ironman World Championship held in Kona, Hawaii recently. To get to the starting line in Kona, you must either be very lucky and get yourself a spot through the lottery, or very talented, and win yourself a qualifying spot at one of the qualifying events held around the world. Tens-of-thousands of triathletes try to get one of those coveted Ironman spots every year. Only 1,793 succeeded.

That means 1,793 "lucky" people get to test themselves on one of the biggest challenges the sports world has to offer ... 2.4-miles of swimming, 112-miles of biking, and a 26.2-mile marathon run through tough ocean waves, and challenging lava-covered terrain. If you don't complete the course within 17 hours, you will be considered as "Did Not Finish". After all the gruelling swim/cycling/running and you are considered DNF????????? This is crazy indeed! But I really marvel at all this tough guys/ladies, real strong determination.

Men's results:
1. Normann Stadler of Germany (Time: 08:11:56)
2. Chris McCormack of Australia (Time: 08:13:07)
3. Faris Al-Sultan of Germany (Time: 08:19:04)
.......... Malaysia's sole qualifier, Wong Ah Thiam, finished at no. 349 with a time of 09:57.

Women's results:
1. Michellie Jones of USA (Time: 09:18:31)
2. Desiree Ficker of USA (Time: 09:24:02)
3. Lisa Bentley of Canada (Time: 09:25:18)

MLB World Champions

Scoreline: St. Louis Cardinals 4 Detroit Tigers 2, in the World Series that produced Cardinals' first World Series title in 24 years. They have won 10 titles now compared to New York Yankees' 26 titles.
One thing that I don't get it is why was it called a world series when only clubs in USA participated in this so-called world series. Where are the clubs from China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Philippines, Netherlands, Italy, Australia, Cuba & Canada where they have professional leagues there too. It should be renamed National Series instead. Or dare not invite other overseas teams? Major League Baseball should seriously re-consider the change of name as it involved clubs from 1 single country only.

Formula 1

Fernando Alonso won his 2nd world title in Formula 1 race in the last leg of the Formula 1 calender which ended in Interlagos, Brazil. Felipe Massa of Ferrari won the race with Alonso coming in 2nd and 3rd placing went to Jenson Button of Honda. Michael Schumacher (my favourite driver) with his slim hope of capturing the title came in at 4th placing thus hampering his hope of a record 8th title.

Nevertheless, Alonso kept his cool to retain his title back-to-back and Renault captured the Constructor's title too with a 5 points margin over Ferrari. Alonso will move on to McLaren next year and everyone will have an open-wide challenge next with the expected retirement of the great Michael Schumacher.

Top-notch Swimming Pool - Australia

One of the world's most technologically advanced pools was officially opened yesterday at the renowned Australia Institute of Sport, in a bid to strengthen the country's chances at the 2008 Olympics. It cost US$12.75m to build the AIS Recovery and Swimming Centre in Canberra.

The centre features a 10-lane, 50m pool with in-built performance analysis and monitoring systems for the training, testing and development of Australia's elite swimmers and teams.

Analysis and monitoring systems packed into the pool walls and blocks, touch pads, magnetic timing gates and 24 fixed cameras will allow coaches and sports scientists to analyse all aspects of the AIS swimmer's performance in training.
The centre will also feature state-of-the art hydrotherapy and recovery facilities – three spa baths, a plunge pool, a cold water walk-through and a river for active recovery and stretching.
