Singaporean Bloggers To Be Monitored

Blogging in Singapore has taken a new twist.

Singaporean bloggers seated in front of their own desktop PC / laptop will be monitored on how and what they blog about (besides those people who urinates in the public toilets).

Singapore's Media Development Authority is looking at rules to ensure that bloggers do not simply endorse, review, advertise, recommend or promote products & services. The main issue here is that some bloggers are being paid to do so where conflict of interest may arise.

If you are being paid, most likely you are obligated to write positive remarks, right?

One of the rules being looked into is that bloggers would be required to state whether gifts were presented / money was paid / products & services were provided for free - prior to putting up that blog post.

I'm all for this new ruling so that consumers won't be duped into obtaining products & services that could be fake/below standards via blogs.

I do lots of reviews and recommendations but they were my own opinions / experiences while using those products & services. If I do get an opportunity where a party requires me to blog about their products & services, I'll certainly be transparent about it. I won't promote the products & services which are lousy or one that fails even my own standards knowing that I'm to be paid or given benefit-in-kind to write about it. In other words, if I have nothing better to say, I'll just keep quiet.

One thing that disturbs me most is where some bloggers do post about products & services not known to them. Such bloggers will be assigned certain products & services to blog about and will be paid once that's done. The best thing, the products & services do not even exist in Malaysia. There's no blogging ethics at all and money is all they think about.

What's your stand on this issue? Malaysia gahmen should impose this too.

Bloggers Invited By Federal Government

Received an invitation from the Ministry of Federal Territories last week to be present for the Blog4FT campaign which was to be held at Pavilion KL on Monday.

I did question the person who invited me as I was wondering how did he obtain my email address and how did he get to know that I was a blogger. You know what I mean when you receive an email from the Federal Government people.

Found out that he was the Special Officer to the Minister too. A small world indeed when my colleague told me he knew this guy after reading the email invitation for this event.

Took leave on Monday and ran around to settle some stuff for the new house and rushed back to shower prior to departing for Pavilion KL. Quite a jam along Jalan Sultan Ismail after exiting Smart Tunnel. Arrived at the centre of Pavilion and saw that it was filled with chairs in view of the launching of the Blog4FT campaign.

The shopping centre was beautifully decorated with Kolam designs in anticipation of the forthcoming Deepavali festival on 17 Oct 2009.

Back to the campaign. What's the campaign about?

The Ministry is engaging bloggers and traditional media to write about stuff / happenings in the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan.

Browse through the dedicated website for this event itself, Blog4FT. Are you game for it? A blogging competition is being held and the Ministry actually encourages you to blog positively and promote FT indirectly.

It's opened to anyone divided into four categories, namely:-
* Malaysian Public - This category is open to all Malaysian citizens except those that fall under the Malaysian Media or the Junior Categories.

* Junior - This category is open only to Malaysian citizens below the age of 18 as at 31 December 2009.

* Malaysian Media - This category is open to employees of Malaysian Media Companies registered with the Malaysian Government.

* International - This category is open to non-Malaysian citizens.

I found that this is a good move indeed as this Ministry is trying to build good rapport with the bloggers instead of threatening bloggers as done by another ministry (which do not deserve my mention).

Registered my goodself upon arrival and was told that the event may begin around 3.15pm. My guess was correct. The little delay to the start of the event attended by big shots was expected.

Don't know how many bloggers were invited but felt privileged to be one of the bloggers.

While waiting for the event to begin, I dropped by at Dome cafe which was located just besides the event area. Made full use of the RM5 voucher (part of the door gift) and ordered a Tiramisu cake (a blogger has forgotten to take picture of his food?!?!??!). After deducting the RM5, the cake cost me RM9.95.

The arrival of the special guests was welcomed by a group of drum instruments performers. Can't take a picture as they were seated on the other end of the stage. You get to see different races playing their own drums (must learn the names of those drums) and they were able to rhyme it beautifully.

The Minister, YB Dato' Raja Nong Chik, gave a short speech telling us that he just got the hang of the internet and high technology era because of pressures from his kids.

After much persuasion from his kids (not those in kindergarten mind you but teens), he caught up with it really fast and is now known as the Facebook Minister in the Cabinet for having a thriving Facebook account.

Sadly and maybe unfortunately, the Ministry of Federal Territories' website is not updated and bearing in mind that the event was organised by the same ministry, they should have taken more responsibility in updating the name of the Minister. It's still showing the previous Minister's name and the previous organisation chart ......... tsk tsk tsk.

C'mon, please update your website.

At the end of the speech, a number of guests were called to the stage to press a button I supposed and it initiated a "biometric scanner". That's what it says at the screen behind them.

Thereafter, a short skit was presented by five individuals depicting how they were brought up in FT since young and what FT was to them.

At the closing of the event, representatives from the Ministry, organiser, sponsors stood at stage for a photo session.

The event (especially the blogging competition's prizes) was sponsored by some large Malaysian companies.

Walked up to the 4th floor to take this picture of the event area.

Could see a better effect of the Kolam design from up there.

My Blog Was Given Warning by Blogspot

When I opened up my email inbox this morning, I saw an email coming in from Blogger. Noticed that my blog was given a warning having been identified as a spam blog.

There are people out there who's trying to kick my blog out of the virtual world to ensure that others don't get to read my articles. Are my articles really that good till my blog has to be deleted / removed?

If you don't like what I have written, please leave. Do not read any further / anymore and do not key in my blog's name again and again just to check on me and flag my blog all the time. My advise to you, please go do something more useful / meaningful with your time / life.

What I have posted are my personal opinions only, gathered from what I have read from all over the internet world. I have written / will write stuff that won't cause / trigger any commotions / misunderstandings / anger / hatred / fights / wars unless it was you who wants to take it out of context and not wanting to read / understanding the article as a whole in a proper manner.

From now onwards, I will be even stricter with unnecessary / irrelevant comments written by blog readers to safeguard against spamming.

The Economics of Blogging

Haven't started a blog yet? A blog was known as weblog in the early days when one of its main function was like a personal diary or to jot down important events or notes for reminder purposes. As time progresses, more people are being exposed to blogs that are hosted by a number of blog platforms.

In Taiwan, blogging is already on a different level. Of course, socio-political bloggers were there long time ago and still around but Taiwanese bloggers are going full time nowadays. Not only that, money is rolling into their bank accounts for blogging.

What do the Taiwanese bloggers do? They worked hard to promote instant food, cosmetics, 3C, travel trips and anything that can be sold. To the extent that in the recent launching of the McDonalds Taiwan new hamburger in Oct 08, there was a need to get three well-known bloggers to taste and blog about the hamburger which was not an option.

The internet advertising agency that handled the McDonalds Taiwan's new hamburger advertisement recruited hundreds of writers to blog about the hamburger to spread the news in a much faster pace.

A known Taiwanese food blogger, 迴紋針, took the opportunity to write about the hamburger but wrote a blog against the product instead. As her blog was well read, the advertising agency has to call her to revise her blog post to which she declined to do so. Personal blog, so personal comments about the hamburger.

Such marketing tactics are known as "blog marketing" or "blog economy" where it is one of the most popular jobs in a time of recession.

Interactive Communications, one of the top five communication agencies, is helping their clients to promote their products via bloggers. End results, sales was twice as much as the initial target. Why blog marketing? Reason number one is that the costs are low and the effects are directly measurable. It was estimated that there are about 200 'blogging spokesperson' campaigns every year.

In Malaysia, there is already a column in the Star newspaper reserved blogger columnist Nicole Tan who usually writes about her travels, happenings around Malaysia, internet shopping or about the blogosphere and bloggers. This is just the beginning for bloggers.

I know of a number of bloggers who are usually invited to attend product launches, events or opening of restaurants or boutiques. The bloggers do not receive payments but free trial products instead. Of course, some full time bloggers do get paid for writing about those functions. Taiwanese bloggers do get paid up to NT$10,000 per blog post. Not too sure what's the market rate in Malaysia.

The world is changing and direct marketing efforts are considering bloggers as the new media era. I have something up in my brain already and have spoken to a hotel in Kuala Lumpur in which bloggers could assist. Can't do much as I'm in Sudan right now.

Besides having a Public Relations Department, companies should be thinking of Bloggers Relations Programme in time to come. Mark my words!

State Governments Hiring Bloggers

When I first started my blog way back at end June 2006, it was due to 'boring' time being stucked in Sudan. Lots of time to think but can't do much. So, out came a blog of mine.

I started to inform my friends that I have a blog too ......... (told them excitedly as if I was amongst the first bloggers) ...........

Some questioned me as to what I'll be writing in my blog as it's like a personal diary. Some said that I will get bored along the way. Some asked sarcastically on whether I was trying to emulate Jeff Ooi .......... dig up dirt swept under the carpet.

The blogosphere is growing really fast. The blogs somehow bloomed further during the run-up to Malaysia's twelfth general election held in Mar 2008. Lots of people got hooked up with bloggers' postings.

Blogging is not going to end and neither will I get bored with it. How can I get bored with it when the state of Pahang and Perak are getting themselves involved too. The respective state governments are hiring bloggers to make right the misconceptions made believed by respective opposition parties / mainstream media (who's always bias towards the present government).

In Pahang (ruled by the present ruling party in the government), the state will hire three bloggers who have retired. They'll be provided with paid allowances, computers and internet access in their homes. If these three are successful, more bloggers will be sourced. Pensioners / retirees - hear this - email your cv to Pahang's Information, Science, Technology and Innovation Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Sharkar Shamsudin (a state assemblyman of Lanchang).
Reading: Pahang govt recruits pensioners as bloggers - Star

In Perak (ruled by the opposition party), has up the challenge against Pahang's move. They have co-ordinated with the Perak Blogger Association to engage with twenty six bloggers. Tried to google for this association but to no avail. Is this association for real or just to show off to Pahang? Where to send your cv if you are interested? You could try your luck with Anuar Hashim, press secretary of the Perak Chief Minister.
Reading: Perak sets up blogger secretariat - Edge Daily

Really looking forward to read what this group of 'state bloggers' are going to post in their respective blogs. Or they just blog hop to scrutinise and report to police on malicious / defamation blogs? Ain't the blogosphere getting interesting day by day?

Socio-Political Bloggers in Cuba

Socio-political bloggers are found everywhere including the nation of Cuba, located in the Central America region.

Cuban socio-political bloggers do face problems with their goverment, just like in Malaysia.

Can we compare Malaysia with Cuba as they are still a communist country?

Besides that, t's not easy to access the internet in Cuba for a chance to blog. Individuals are not permitted to have an personal internet account. Corporate users don't have fast internet access. Who were allowed internet access then? Only foreigners and some government employees and academics are allowed where their account are being monitored by the government.

It's not surprising with such restriction where common folks in Cuba had their first taste of buying or using mobile phones (or cell phones or handphones) during end March 2008. That's really shocking in this era of high technology.

The famous socio-political blogger in Cuba is 32 years old, Yoani Sanchez, who blogs under Generation Y. In order to blog, she had to dress as a tourist to enter a hotel compound which has wi-fi internet access. That too, she has to pay around US$6.00 an hour.

This doesn't stop another Cuban blogger by the name of Eva Hernandez who blogs under Sin Evasion.

Zimbabwean Bloggers

Wanting to hear the real or actual news in Zimbabwe? Looks like the scenario is the same in Zimbabwe as in Malaysia. Mainstream media is controlled by the ruling party and oppositions have no say and no way of getting their message across to the nation generally. So, Malaysia = Zimbabwe?

Zimbabwe held its latest so-called democratic general election on Sunday and after six days, the Election Commission couldn't release the full results. It's so tense in Zimbabwe now. Can you imagine that after inserting your ballot paper into the ballot box, you don't even know the results after six full days!!!!!

Read the following Zimbabwean related blogs to learn more about the Zimbabwean internal issues. You only hear the truth in such blogs (wonder why):-

This is Zimbabwe - Sokwanele - Zvakwana is a peoples' movement, embracing supporters of all pro-democratic political parties, civic organizations and institutions in Zimbabwe

Kubatana Blogs - an online community of Zimbabwean activists

Zimbabwean Pundit - the world as seen from the eyes of a Zimbabwean

Cry Beloved Zimbabwe - a Zimbabwean born writer, entrepreneur and political activist

The Bearded Man - a former Zimbabwean policeman but residing in England now. Convicted that the more people that hear about the devastating rule in Zimbabwe and the real problems therein, the better!

Enough is Enough - Seeing Zimbabwe from a different angle

Mugabe Makaipa - Retired doc, living a life of leisure in the rural Philippines

David Coltart - MDC Senator, has been a human rights lawyer in Zimbabwe since his return to the country in 1983. He was first elected to represent the Bulawayo South House of Assembly constituency in June 2000, and was rel-elected in March 2005. In March 2008 he was elected as a Senator to represent the Khumalo Senatorial constituency in Bulawayo

Explosion in My Blog

Noticed that my blog posting on John Arne Riise's Payslip has gotten lots of readers from Europe accessing my blog owing to them being curious on seeing his payslip. Normally, blog readers from United Kingdom would be less than 3% of the total daily visitors but on Friday itself, the percentage jumped aggressively out of a total of 600++ visitors.

Iraqi Bloggers

The country of Iraq has gone through a lot of trials of late especially their citizens. I'm sure most of them wanted a peaceful time with their own family members or friends or having the time to read what's going on around the world online.

There are a few Iraqis who were able to access internet and took the opportunity to blog as well. When you have the time, you could view their blogs and give them some moral support.

Neurotic Iraqi Wife is an Iraqi-British woman living and working in the Green Zone.

Nabil is 19. He left Baghdad and arrived in Jordan last month.

Sunshine is a 15-year-old girl in Mosul, northern Iraq.

Aunt Najma is also in Mosul. She is 19 and has sailed through her first year university exams. She describes the family holiday to Syria.

Mohammed is a 25-year-old dentist in Baghdad. His attempt at a summer holiday was less successful; he and his wife were denied entry to Jordan. He describes their 24 hours in Amman's Queen Alia International Airport.

Twentyfourstepstoliberty is a young Iraqi man studying journalism in Berkeley, California.

Riverbend is one of Iraq's best known bloggers writing in English. She is Sunni and lives in Baghdad. She explains her opposition to the wall being built around the Sunni district of Adhamiya - and her family's decision finally to leave Iraq.

Iraq the Model is written by brothers in Baghdad, who support the American military presence in Iraq. Here, they despair of the political manoeuvring by Democrats in Congress to pull the troops out.

Where the Date Palms Grow is an Iraqi man in his 30s who moved to Britain in February 2007.

Healing Iraq, is a 27 year old Iraqi dentist from Baghdad, who is now studying journalism in New York.

Marshmallow26 is an Iraqi woman living "in one of the Iraqi cities".

Sooni is an IT programmer blogging from Baghdad.

Chikitita is a 27 year old woman living in Baghdad.

Iraqi Rocker, or "Meemo" is a 19 year old man living in Baghdad.

Kenyan Bloggers

African nations have lots of issues at times that may not be known by the general public. Earlier, I have blogged about a few well-known Nigerian bloggers, where Nigerians have also taken the stance to blog about happenings within their country. In order for the general public to get their hands onto such blog news, Africans may just have to go online to obtain the news. This contributed to the growth of blogs and particularly in Kenya, number of bloggers have grown tremendously.

Daudi Were, Mentalacrobatics.com - stated that Kenyan youth are reading more from the internet. Another socio-political blogger on the way up.

Ory Okolloh, Mzalendo.com - stated that most area in Kenya were not well equipped to access the internet. Ory's blog is like those socio-political blogs where it provides wider discussion on existing/new goverment rulings.

An anonymous blogger based in Nairobi, Kenya, bankelele.blogspot.com - is looking at the way the members of parliament are giving themselves a huge bonus with the country's economy in much doubt.

Back to Normal

OK, I have gotten my laptop's new power adaptor yesterday afternoon. Back to normal blogging. Stay tuned for more interesting postings.

Just prior to this posting, I was with 2 other church members working on a surprise to be unveiled during this coming Sunday morning service in conjunction with our church's 19th Anniversary celebration. Can't list out now as some church members may be reading it here. But surely it will get the whole congregation laughing.

Wanted to pay a visit to the gym yesterday evening but the muscles were still in pain due to Tuesday night's workout. Got lots of unused muscles all this while.....hehe but painful means it was effective.

Have to administer some emails before going to sleep.

Awaiting Power Cable

Yeah.....still awaiting for the power cable. Logging in via another laptop where you won't believe the state of this laptop. Almost considered a scrap if I may call it that way. The screen's almost coming off, held on by just 4 screws only...... unbelievable but could still be used lah to post this at least.... hehe. And the best part, the sole USB port was not working, now how am I supposed to connect it to my external hard disk..........

Could be getting the new power cable by today/tomorrow ..... enjoyed my weekend with an Saturday afternoon meeting at church to discuss on the Christmas Dinner (to be held in church premise) and a Christmas Carnival (held elsewhere). More info on this soon.

At the same time, I'm working on the Christmas Drama 2007's script. Hopefully can finalise this by this week and get the whole drama cast members in order and start rehearsing their roles from then on. All blog readers are most welcome to see the drama which would be a 4 part series being acted out on 4 Sundays in December 2007.

Went for a wedding dinner at Holiday Inn, Glenmarie yesterday night. Known this guy for almost 20 years and a gang of us (some knew him for coming 30 years). All the best to him and his wife. His dad told us "he's way behind you guys".

Viral Tags

Became involved in a Viral Tags Blog Rank Boosting Experiment that I came across in This Is Miracle. The original matrix is here. Copy the matrix, change the Host Tag to the three words that you want to use, and add their tag into the matrix, if it isn't there already. Most importantly, when someone adds a matrix, be sure to add them to your list. Then, spread the word.

Here is the current matrix: Instructions: Important Update - Please read here!

1. Copy and paste the matrix of "ViralTags" below courtesy of Founders Cafe (to support Jimmy's quest of launching his own Internet Startup with a shoestring budget, please consider subscribing to his Full RSS Feed to see his triumphs and struggles in real time).

2. Substitute the Host Tag and one of the "Viral Tags" in the matrix with your anchor text of choice with your blog's URL. Please keep anchor text to a max of 3 words to keep the matrix size manageable.

3. When you get a ping back from someone that has your link in one of their "Viral Tags", practice good karma by copying his/her Host Tag's anchor text (automatically the associated link will also be copied) and paste it over one of your "Viral Tags" below.

4. Encourage and invite your readers to do the same and soon this can grow virally.

As more and more bloggers copy and paste this matrix, the more backlinks you will have with your anchor text. If everybody who copy and paste from your blog does the same, pretty soon this will spread and go viral. So, the sooner you participate, the more links with anchor text you will receive.

China & Hong Kong Bloggers

Few of the China/Hong Kong bloggers that are quite famous in the blogosphere and also amongst non-bloggers looking for interesting news to read:-

EastSouthWestNorth's Roland Soong reads an astonishing number of newspaper article each day. He selects those that have news value and translates them into English on his blog so that the English-language reader can read about what is happening in Hong Kong, mainland China and Taiwan. EastSouthWestNorth has a certain influence among foreign media. The foreign newspapers reported on "Bus Uncle" through the translation on EastSouthWestNorth.

Hong Kong Media Buster has a stated goal of criticizing Hong Kong media. In order to make powerful criticisms and reflections, the basic requirement is knowledge and information. The two-man team at Hong Kong Media Busters cites information from foreign media and United Nations official sources.

Diuman Park is also run by two persons. They are critical but also informative. Their sarcastic tone offers a different kind of attraction. They do draw around 1,000 readers per day.

Isaac Mao shared his views about blogger culture with us and showed that mainland netizens are using blogs to communicate and receive information that the traditional media would not provide. As one of the earliest bloggers in the Chinese community, Isaac is not only co-founder of CNBlog.org which is the earliest evangelizing site in China on grassroots publishing, but also the co-organizer of Chinese Blogger Conference (2005 in Shanghai, 2006 in Hangzhou).

Another classical example of blogger culture is the One More Kilogram project. 1kg More (short for “1 kilogram more in your travel pack”) is a non-official cause of charity crossing over travel.
It runs behind the idea of travelers bringing 1kg of inexpensive educational materials in addition to their package to give away to some one that needs it along their journey, e.g. kids that cannot even afford a pencil rubber.

Jacky's Blog said: "One uses one's personal power to influence society and change the world."
