Contribution to Safe Drinking Water

We are blessed in the sense that we have clean water to drink wherever we go in Malaysia or in any other major cities in the world. We can turn on the tap anytime, boil the tap water and there you go, you have safe drinking water.

There are people (those who could afford of course) who have installed water purifiers, water filters, reverse osmosis or water treatment system to ensure that the water they consume is even cleaner than before. I would say in Malaysia itself lots of people that I know of would have some sort of equipment to obtain safe drinking water.

Unfortunately, there are also people on some parts of the world who don't have drinking water within their residential area. They may have to walk miles/kilometres just to bring back some water for drinking. That water may not be clean.

Waterborne diseases in such areas are so rampant that the young ones die from the diseases. About six thousand people die from such unfortunate situation, most of whom are children.

Recently I have read about a small gadget which could help save many lives due to this waterborne disease or to overcome the shortage of safe drinking water.

There is this private company by the name of Vestergaard Frandsen that produces a 10-inch plastic cylinder that filters the bacteria, parasites and some viruses at a cost of less than US$3/-.

The product is named LifeStraw®. LifeStraw comes in two packages, LifeStraw® Personal and LifeStraw® Family.

This LifeStraw could be used on the spot itself. It's an invention that safeguards lots of people from any waterborne disease especially those faraway from any tap water or clean water. Its lifespan is about 700 litres of water (if saline water, it's limited to 350 litres).

Important facts to know:-
* LifeStraw Personal has been referred to as 'One of the Ten Things that will Change the Way We Live' by Forbes Magazine.

* LifeStraw Family delivers water as per EPA guidelines for microbiological water purifiers.

* February 2008, LifeStraw Personal receives the Saatchi & Saatchi Award for World Changing Ideas in New York.

Today, you can play a part in this life saving tool by donating a small amount of money. Following organisations have organised and will distribute the tools on your behalf to places where most required:-

*World Outreach International seeing it as a beneficial tool has organised a donation campaign to purchase this tool for people who need it

*IMA World Health

*Rotary Club of Fort Lauderdale, Florida (for US$ dollar donations)

*Rotary Club of Menorca, Spain (for International currency contribution)

*Rotary Club of Brynmawr, UK

Project Gift a Kid

Bloggers in Malaysia are again at the forefront, this time in Kuala Lumpur itself. I'm proud to blog about this project brought up by AllMalaysian Bloggers Project team who is assisting Rotaract Club of Kuala Lumpur in bringing gifts to underprivileged kids.

The Rotaract Club of Kuala Lumpur is sourcing for funds to purchase back-to-school materials, school books, stationery, uniforms for underprivileged kids who are 6 to 15 years old for the coming school year.

The project is called Project Gift A Kid. Primarily, kids from:-

* Rumah WAKE 1 (a home for HIV+ children and their affected siblings under the Pertubuhan Wanita dan Kesihatan Kuala Lumpur); and

* Sekolah Rendah Jenis Kebangsaan (Tamil) Cheras (many of the children come from the surrounding low-cost flats and squatter areas and most cannot afford school uniforms let alone school fees) will benefit in this project.

High cost of living has hit many Malaysian families. If you have been voicing your dissatisfaction against the government for not managing or controlling the country's inflation, this is the time where you can do something.

It's Christmas season again and a time of giving. Why not bring a smile to the school kids. Let them have hope in their studies and you could be sponsoring a kid that will bring glory to Malaysia in the future.

Browse through the Project Gift A Kid blog and find out how you can sponsor as little as RM10 or up to RM150. Your grand dinner at top restaurant would have cost more than that easily. Why not sacrifice that one good meal to allow a kid to study for a whole year.

As for Malaysian bloggers, you could play a big role too. You could help out by blogging out loud to the world and letting people from all walks of life to contribute to this project. In addition to that, each blogger who blog about this project will indirectly sponsor one kid to go for a movie at the courtesy of United International Pictures ("UIP").

Sponsorship method:-
* Get in touch with Kavita (016-259 3818), Anu (016-254 6995) or Sumitra (012-246 9109) or email rotaract_kl@yahoo.com.sg to get a sponsorship form(s).
* All payments can be made via cash or cheque written to “ROTARACT CLUB OF KUALA LUMPUR” to the people listed above.
* Closing date for sponsorships is December 25, 2008.

Or,
* Return the sponsorship form(s) to Star Publications (M) Bhd between Dec 15 and 18, at the following address - Menara Star, Phileo Damansara II, 15 Jalan 16/11, 46350, Petaling Jaya.

------------------------------------
In blogging for the above, bloggers will be rewarded with a chance to win something for their efforts. Take a look at the UIP Caption Contest. For the contest, I chose to blog about the Angus, Thongs & Perfect Snogging movie.

Four kids were watching their friend's moves, who lost in a bet, who had to dress up in a fruit dressing walking through the town market.

Older folks was talking about her dressing and flashlights from cameras and camera phone nearly blinded her eyesight.

At the end of the day, she is convinced that the controversial yoga will clear her mind of from those laughing, jeering and the embarassment that she went through.

Visit to Myanmar Refugees

A long weekend for Malaysians owing to the Wesak Day today. Saturdays was my usual personal stuff, with my young adults cell group in the late afternoon. Thereafter, lazed at home till night to watch the English FA Cup final between Portsmouth and Cardiff. Not much of interest in this match even though it's a final, just because my team was not in it ..... hehe

On Sunday, as usual, attended church service in the morning and went over to the project site of my new house to see the work progress. It's already 30% complete as per the architect's approval and targetted to finish by year end for the 38 units of houses for this phase. Went with another family who bought at the same place. Talking about what we can do in future too......

Went back and the migraine attack came to haunt me from afternoon till 11pm. In between still managed to drive to Segambut area for dinner with friends. One of those days that I couldn't feel anything for food. The migraine was irritating me the whole meal and my friends noticed that I didn't take much too (as I'm the usual big eater, a bandaraya known to many). After dinner, straight for home and knocked off immediately on my bed.

This morning, woke up at 8am, fresh and excited. Arranged for a visit to the Myanmar refugees in KL. My group of friends brought some food for this group of kids and food preparation was on-going to be served after some lessons (taught other volunteers) for the kids.
A photo war went on, clicking away to see who gets the best picture.
As there was another group of volunteers who came earlier, we were planning for the next trip.
Children listened with full attention. This is their only way to learn about English and the world that they are living in, though far from their original land of birth.

Ladies from various organisations do volunteer their time to teach these kids. They could be from the USA, UK or even the foreign embassies.

Their window to the future is not within their control but the caretaker's wish for all of them is "To become a future leader for Myanmar when they grow up".

These are some of the stuff that they make to earn additional income to support the kids. They would have photo albums, bookmarks, season greeting cards, etc.....

Different organisations would take their stuff on consignment basis and sell it for them and all profits were channeled back to the home.
Myanmar traditional cloth which was of very good materials and handwork. Yeah, hand made indeed. Didn't ask about the price as I didn't bring enough money at all, just enough for my earlier breakfast and the toll when I left the house.
They have even started to make Christmas stuff in order to be sold at the end of the year.

This is a group that doesn't sit at home with folded hands and legs, waiting for donations to fall on them but they do work hard to support themselves.

My group did talk about getting a computer set for them at the end of the year.

Play to Meet the Needs

Any told you before that while playing you could contribute to the needful. Free Rice, a website that was set-up on 7 October 2007 has this idea of getting website visitors to play a game and if the visitors succeed, donations in the form of grains of rice will be made.

You will asked to provide the meaning of an english word. Four options were given for you to choose. And if you get it correct, 20 grains of rice will be donated to United Nations World Food Program (it was increased to 20 grains per correct answer w.e.f. 28 Nov 2007 compared to 10 grains earlier).

On the first day, 830 grains of rice were "donated". As the website community caught on with this game, people continued to play the game and by 8 November 2007, 77 million grains of rice were gained.

As of today, I have partly contributed 340 grains of rice. Phew! Some of those english words were alien to me. And I can't recall the meaning for some words as we seldom use such words. It was a good way to refresh my english vocabulary. On the point of publishing this blog posting, total grains of rice donated = 4,550,033,230. Find out where the grains of rice will be sent to here.

This genius idea was the brainchild of American online fundraising pioneer John Breen. There is also a sister website under the name of www.poverty.com.

Unity Band in Malaysia

Came across this project initiated by Malaysians in conjunction with Malaysia's 50th Independence Day. It's called the Unity Band. As stated in its website, the red colour represents the blood that flows in each of our veins and it's the same red colour blood for all Malaysians irregardless of their race, religion or colour of the skin.

(as extracted from Unity Band's website) The following are some of the benefits for the owners of the Unity Band O:-

1) Of the Unity Bands O in circulation, 50 bands have a Gold Heart on it. These exclusive bands are worth RM$5,050 CASH to anyone lucky enough to acquire one.

2) From October 2007, we will run a series of competitions with Astro to spot random UB wearers and award them a whole bunch of goodies. It may include fully paid holidays, mobile phones, shopping vouchers, concert tickets, cinema vouchers, a Ferrari 360 Modena ( ok just kidding about the last one!), etc, etc.

3) Registered UB owners are eligible to participate in various online competitions including photographs, short videos, design, music etc.

4) Two lucky draws featuring attractive prizes will be held for registered Unity Band O owners. Dates and further details will be announced soon.

5) Six major events will take place over the next 12 months entitling registered owners of the Unity Band O special privileges at these events.

6) Finally when the UBs are available for retail to the public, we hope to bundle a whole bunch of freebies. Can’t announce all now la.. Hang in there, will be worth your time!

A very noble project and I really hope that all human race will understand and take heart of the charities that the project intends to assist. Importantly, it was put up by Malaysians. Read more about the Unity Band 0 project in their website.

Fly A380 with Singapore Airlines

In 41 days, the world's first A380 commercial flight under Singapore Airlines will depart from Singapore for Sydney. All the seats in this first flight will be auctioned off for charity purpose, conducted by the famous online auction company, eBay.

Prior to this launch, an Airbus A380 flight was opened for scrutiny to the press and potential corporate clients and Airbus received thumbs up from their feedback.

How much does it cost? Well, it's according to what you estimate in comparison with existing rates plus some premium for the A380 airplane's experience. From the chart (click for larger picture), you could respective bidding prices for different class of travel.

If you think it's expensive, another person may think otherwise with his pet A380 corporate jet.

How are much are you willing to pay for that maiden flight? There are 3 different travelling class, click each picture to find out more.

As claimed, this is a class beyond First. Have a peek here of what you can expect from a suite seating.

The most spacious the world has ever seen.

More comfort than ever.

All proceeds from this flight will benefit 4 charity organisations:-
* One-third to Singapore's Community Chest;
* One-third split between the Sydney Children's Hospital, Randwick and The Children's Hospital at Westmead, both in Sydney; and
* One-third to Médecins Sans Frontières, also known as Doctors Without Borders.

And it's nice of ExxonMobil Aviation who will be sponsoring the jet fuel for this charity flight.

Prague Sinfonia in Malaysia

Prague Sinfonia Orchestra - this orchestra team, from Czech Republic, was born as an expanded version of the Prague Chamber Orchestra during their 16th tour in North America.

Christian Benda is their chief conductor and artistic director and they have collaborated for the last 10 years. Prague Sinfonia have been on 16 tours in the United States and Canada, 6 tours to Latin America and Japan. Recently they toured with great acclaim at South Korea, Malaysia and Singapore.

The Czech audience can hear them in their concert series held in the large hall of the Rudolfinum (Dvorák Hall) and as regular guest at the two major Czech music festivals, the Prague Spring and the Prague Autumn.

They have made many recordings for labels like EMI, Decca, Sony Classics, Naxos, Polydor, Nippon Columbia, Denon, BMG, Telarc, Ariola, Eurodisc, Supraphon, and their extensive discography boasts a number of prestigious prizes such as the Wiener Flötenuhr, twice the Grand Prix du Disque Académie Charles Cros, and, after having sold one million records, the Golden Disc Award.

After reading the above introduction, the renowned Prague Sinfonia Orchestra will perform a one-night only charity Gala Benefit Concert together with famed violin soloist Min-Lee, pianist Vaclav Macha and young Malaysian soprano Irma Lailatul at the Plenary Hall of the KL Convention Centre on 8 of September 2007. And I'll be there for sure. Orchestra's music is one of my favourite.

Please note that this is a charity concert where funds will be channeled to MY Budding Artists Fund (led by Kiwanis Club of PJ and the Smile Team) and the Sultanah Bahiyah Foundation.

I wonder whether I could stand besides the Sultan and Sultanah of Kedah, the Yang di Pertua Negri of Negri Sembilan as they'll be there to grace the charity concert and possibly the Yang di Pertuan Agong .............. hmmmmmmmmm

The organisers are planning 2 pre-concert cocktails: a VVIP Royal Cocktail to be hosted by the Embassy of the Czech Republic and also another VIP cocktail for the other VIP guests. Now how do I get in there?

Temuan Community

Temuan Community - a project under Soroptimist International Club of Bangsar ("SICB") in Kampung Hulu Cemperuh, Pahang. A long and lasting relationship started with SICB adopting the 30 families in the community, undertaking health and education and starting a goat-rearing project for them to generate income in 2001. It started due to the sight of a child’s body badly disfigured by fire caught the attention and compassion of the SICB team members who were with members from the Australian Soroptimist.

The goat-rearing project won a prestigious award last week. The project clinched the coveted SI Excellent Best Practice Award for SICB last week, beating 300 entries worldwide. It was the first time that a Malaysian Soroptimist club had won the overall Top Award, although in previous years several clubs had won in other categories. The goat-rearing project also won the International Best Practice Award in Economic and Social Development, one of six focus areas.

SICB’s efforts helped in alleviating poverty of the marginalised orang asli ("indigenous people") in Kampung Hulu Cemperuh.

The award entitles SICB to participate in the United Nations plenary session on the 2007 Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) in New York from Feb 26 to March 9 next year. Soroptimist International is a non-governmental organisation for women in management and the professions. It has some 93,000 members in 3,000 clubs in 125 countries. SI has general consultative status with several UN and World Health Organisation agencies. (source: The Star)

"heart4love” project

Yvonne Foong is a 20-year-old full of heart and soul.

She suffers from a genetically incurable disease called neurofibromatosis (NF) that has robbed her of her hearing and scarred her face. Sadly, Yvonne has NF2, the more rare form of NF with the characteristic of acoustic neuroma, where tumours grow on hearing nerves, impairing the ability to hear.

The computer became her window to the world as she scoured for information, and her search led her to Dr Rick A. Friedman, an expert in hearing preservation in acoustic neuroma treatment. He performed surgery on her for free in Los Angeles on Sept 13, 2004. Dr Friedman and the co-surgeon will not be charging me for removing the tumour and doing the implantation,” said Yvonne. Out of the RM230,000 (US$62,162) she needs, she has received RM63,581 (US$17,184) so far.

From selling T-shirts to giving motivational talks to organising a rock concert, Yvonne will do whatever it takes to make sure she does not burden her old-age parents with her operation expenditures.

Yvonne and her friends are also organising the Rock4Hope concert featuring Deja Voodoo Spells and A Day at The Zoo at the Sunway University College on Sept 9 under the "heart4love" Project. Tickets are at RM20 each.

“My journey is really tough but I need to travel this road because I yearn for a normal life. A life so normal that I will be able to pursue an active career in journalism, write books, give motivational talks and have my own family in years to come. All I ask for is a chance,” she said. (Extracted from The Star)

I like Yvonne's persistency and strong DREAMS as I always call for in everybody's mindset. If your dreams are powerful and big enough, it will bring you places. If you don't have dreams, you won't be going anywhere at all. Trust me!

Pattaya International Fireworks Festival

Pattaya is definitely firing up its presence internationally. Covid19 has hit many nations really hard and Pattaya wasn't exempted from ...
