Lights Ready For Christmas in Sao Paulo

The Christmas season is coming and tourist areas around the world is preparing to draw the crowds in. People are seen gathering near the Ibirapuera Park Christmas Tree in the city of Sao Paulo, Brazil. The tree is 60 meters tall, weighs 28 tons and has 500,000 lamps.

Casino Royale - movie review

Casino Royale – starring Daniel Craig, Judi Dench, Mads Mikkelsen & Eva Green. Managed to download this new movie and watched it with a colleague. Much awaited James Bond movie with a new guy taking the James Bond role. Throughout the film, we didn’t quite hear James Bond addressing himself as “Bond, James Bond” which was his trademark name. The movie started off with James going after a suspect and chased him through the busy streets of a city in Madagascar into an embassy located nearby. Killing that suspect in the embassy drew wide criticism from his lady boss. His next mission was off to Nassau of Bahamas to tail a guy suspected of illegal trading of arms.

James was to stop another guy from blowing up (with an oil tanker truck) a new aeroplane which was being lauched (similar to the Airbus A380 size). Not much of steamy scenes with ladies that he could draw with the usual James Bond charisma of previous Bond series. A lady (Eva) from the government treasury department was sent to assist him in the funds required for James’ next move, to participate in a private casino duel with top poker players. Stakes went to a high of US$150m and the guy he was trailing all the way to Bahamas was involved too. Somehow, as all gambling movies do, the hero will the final duel. James was cheated of his winnings (where he was to deposit back into the government account) by his lady assistant who was part of the bad guy’s team.

Towards the end, James was in Venice and had to pursue the bad guy to retrieve his money stolen from him by his lady assistant and the part where the building came tumbling down into the main river was a good take. Personally, I was very disappointed with this Bond show. For the first time (as far as I can recall from previous series), there was no gadgets introduced for Bond….all bare hands and guns. This Bond was portrayed as a very violent Bond who intend to kill the bad guy in the casino who almost caused Bond’s life. But I like his Aston Martin car a lot (the only thing in the movie which captured my eyes, not even the ladies in the movie). Click here to watch the movie trailer.

Nuclear Scientist Wins World Award

Nuclear scientist Chantara Thevy Ratnam slogged for 10 years to help Malaysia score a first in the international innovation arena. She became the first Malaysian to receive the prestigious Grand Prix award at the 34th International Exhibition of Inventions, New Techniques and Products in Geneva, Switzerland earlier this year.

The senior research officer at the Malaysia Nuclear Agency (Nuklear Malaysia, formerly known as Malaysia Institute of Nuclear Technology) submitted a winning innovation — a radiation sterilisable PVC compound for medical products. The winner was decided by a 78-member jury, was bestowed on the best among 1,000 inventions displayed by 750 researchers from 45 countries.

Chantara’s contribution to science and technology is reflected in her body of published work, which numbers 78 and include 32 manuscripts in international journals. As a result of her success, she is featured in the 7th Edition of Who’s Who in Science & Engineering (2003) published in the United States. She was also named “International Scientist of The Year 2004” by the International Biographical Centre in Cambridge, UK.

Flying Alarm Clock

Malaysian Mathematics

I find it most alarming that Malaysian schools teach our children the wrong things. I mean: can the children really apply what they are taught in school later in life? For example, can you imagine a mathematics question in a recent examination as follows?"

If an egg costs fifty Sen, and if you buy one-eighth of the egg, how much would you have to pay?" Who in heaven's name will want to buy one-eighth of an egg? The shopkeeper will probably think you are crazy and he will be equally stupid to break the egg and measure one-eighth for you. Yet, this is how they structure the questions in Malaysian schools. Why not pose questions that would be more useful later in life when you go out into the world to earn your living?To help Malaysia 's Ministry of Education bet to face the realities of life, we are suggesting some questions they could use in our classrooms

QUESTION 1
If you drive from Kuala Lumpur to Penang along the PLUS Highway and there are four speed traps along the way, and if each speed trap would cost you RM 300.00 in fines, how much in fines would you accumulate by the time you reach Penang ?

1. I would not suffer any fines as the oncoming cars would flash their headlights and I would slow down before coming to the speed trap.
