Shaolin Temple Monks vs. Japanese Ninjas

Ever seen a movie that shows duels between Shaolin Temple Monks against the Japanese Ninjas? I did but I can't remember the name of the shows.

I wonder whether the Ninjas had been deployed into China when Japan was attacking China during the World War II.

And whether the Shaolin Temple Monks were called to defend their country. Shaolin Temple did organise a World Kungfu Master championship last year to find the best of the bests. Maybe it was to pick someone to challenge exponents from other martial arts schools????

Which of the two factions will win if both parties were to fight?

Lately, news came about that a Japanese Ninja travelled to China to challenge the Shaolin Temple Monks at their home ground. It seems that the Ninja came out unbeaten in the unarmed duel. So who won? Was it to decide whose martial art skills were much more superior?

Latest Credit Card Fraud's Modus Operandi

Received this via an email this afternoon:-

Another credit card fraud scheme forwarded to me by a friend. Pls be aware!...

I just want to share the incident that happened to me yesterday. I received a call from a woman by the name Lisa claiming she is calling on behalf of Bank Negara. She introduced herself formally and explained to me that Bank Negara is concerned for credit card users in Malaysia who overspend their limit and put themselves too deep in debt. So, Bank Negara is introducing this new "MBF Countdown Backup" card for all owners of credit cards all around Malaysia and will soon be a compulsory thing. The card, according to Lisa, will be swiped everytime a transaction is performed using your credit card and this will enable Bank Negara to monitor our spending. And in return, we will get discounts ranging from 5% to 40% for different merchants.

Then, this is where my stupidity sets in. Because she spoke to me in Bahasa Malaysia and the background noise implicates that it is a bank working environment, and above all this, she was able to read out to me my 16-digit credit card numbers and particulars and even my outstanding balance with the credit card, it convinced me that this could be a new system implemented by Bank Negara. So, when she asked for my 3-digit approval code written behind the credit card, I "STUPIDLY" gave it to her.

Then after all this was charade was over, Lisa informed me that a charge of RM480 will be charged to my credit card as a starters fee to waive off the annual fee. This woke me up!! So, I questioned Lisa on why do I need to pay for something that Bank Negara wants to implement to help the people of Malaysia (not a very noble cause).

Then she explained to me that they are from a company calling on behalf of Bank Negara. And she said all the banks are well aware of this system. She then passed me over to her manager, Mr. Zakri or Mr. Z (similar to the MIB) or something. This gentleman then tries to assure me that this is not a fraud or scam.

Then after his long-winded speech about the benefits of their card no longer Bank Negara's), I told him to hold the approval of the card as I don't need it. I told him that I will call my bank to verify this card and get back to him. He agreed to my suggestion and even gave me 2 of his contact numbers for me to get back to him (03-40422522 and 03-40424288).

So, when I called both my credit card banks regarding this matter both banks told me that there was no such thing. Immediately I told that I might have fell for a fraud telephony case and wanted to cancel and suspend all my credit cards. The banks suspended my cards and agreed to send me a replacement card. Then when I called back Mr. Z at the number he gave me, a different lady attended to me and passed me on to a chinese lady who spoke in mandarin to me in a very heavy China accent. I told them that I have called my cc banks and cancelled my cards and specifically told her that I do not agree to their terms and I don't want their offer. She explained to me and assured me that they will delete my cc details and not charge me for anything. So, all this happened yesterday.

Being paranoid, I called my banks again this morning to double check if any transactions had gone through yesterday after I cancelled my card. And guess what. Those m#^*!#f actually did try to charge me but the banks did not let the transactions go through. I consider myself lucky coz I acted a step ahead of them.

Lesson from all of this, never ever entertain telephony offers that involve credit cards. 2 of my colleagues fell for these scams before and 1 of them was lucky enough to have the bank recognise it as a fraud case while the other 1 lost RM3000.

Tyre Clampings at McDonald's

Received this via an email. Is it really happening in McDonald's of Malaysia?
----------------------------
McDonald's Autocity in Penang has a new rule on their parking lots (maybe this is not a new rule just I did not noticed on that). Anyone who parks their cars at their parking lots (even though you are their customers) for more than 2 hours, their tires will be clamped. Subsequently, you need to pay RM50 just to open the car clamp. They have displayed the notice regarding this and there will be no warning letter issue out even though you have done it on first time (no chance given).

McDonald's Greenland (in Penang too) has the same rule as well. If you park yr car more than certain period, you will be fined. However, this franchise will first issue the warning letter before clamp your tire (my friend has experienced it). I heard from McD Autocity's staff that there is one more "private car park" in Butterworth which do not allow their customers to park their car more than 45 minutes. Else, your car's tire will be clamped and you will be fined just to open the lock.

Thus, in future, while you park your car in any McD franchise, pls be aware on the sign board (it is hardly to be noticed due to the color tone and the landscaping around). They did not have any standardization on this rule for all McD franchises. Feedback already provided to their head quarter but there is no response from them.

Thanks and hope that you all still can enjoy yr meal in McD.
----------------------------
Together with the email, an attachment of the receipt issued for the RM50 tyre clamping. As this lousy laptop don't any picture softwares (as compared to mine), I will post that receipt in due course.

US$660 Million Settlement for Sexual Abuse

A shocking US$660 million sum was decided as the settlement figure for the controversial sexual abuse case involving 508 individuals (plaintiffs) against the Los Angeles Roman Catholic diocese.

Apparently, those priests and members of Catholic orders, responsible for the sinful acts, may not be held accounted for it as the diocese would be the guilty party in the legal case. Wonder whether real justice was done.

Who's going to pay for that staggering US$660 million:-
- US$250 million would be paid by the archdiocese;
- US$227 million by insurers;
- US$60 million by religious orders whose priests and brothers are accused of perpetrating some of the abuse; and
- US$123 million from “other sources,” including religious orders “not yet participating” in the settlement.

But would the settlement soothe the victims' hearts? One of the victim attributed his alcoholism, aggression, depression and two broken marriages, in part, to the abuse and the years of suppressing the memories. It was not easy for the victims after all these years.

People really wondered how could so many religious persons at a single diocese could have committed such an act. The end time is really coming.

Free Arms and Bullets from Police

"Free Arms and Bullets from Police" - this should be the title for the No proper records of arms and bullets taken from armoury as reported in The Star in relation to Altantuya Shariibuu's murder case.

Although there was a register for police personnel to record the outgoing and return of the arms and remaining bullets, police personnel tend to take it for granted. When the register was presented to the court to check on those arms taken by the suspects in the murder case, the court saw this incomplete records. One of the police in charge of the register claimed carelessness.

Waaaaaaaaah! So simple, just say "Oops, sorry my honour, it was my carelessness in not ensuring the register was properly recorded". And she gets away scot-free?? Maybe the arms and bullets were rented out to third parties?? hehehehe......yeah what, how can the Special Action Force armoury not keep proper order for arms/bullets under their care...... I know what, why not the gahmen contract it out to a private company.

What a waste of gahmen fund in increasing the police salaries.

Disputes on New 7 Wonders

Just when the world's citizens numbering about 100 million (via online, SMS and telephone voting) have chosen the New Seven Wonders and officially declared on 7 July 2007 in Lisbon, Portugal, there seems to be some disputes on how the New Seven Wonders were chosen.

Before I reveal who is disputing it, below are the official New 7 Wonders of the World?
Petra, Jordan
The Taj Mahal, India

Chichén Itzá, Mexico
Christ Redeemer, Brazil
The Roman Colosseum, Italy
The Great Wall, China
Machu Picchu, Peru

UNESCO, the United Nation cultural body that designates world heritage sites, disputed by stating "this campaign responds to other criteria and objectives than that of UNESCO in the field of heritage". So how now?

In order not to confuse the world, UNESCO has also declared that UNESCO is not involved in this New 7 Wonders project. This project is actually funded by Bernard Weber, a Swiss-born Canadian who is also a filmmaker, museum curator, aviator and explorer.

UNESCO also stated that criticised the ballot, saying it sent out a "negative message to countries whose sites have not been retained." Good move by UNESCO......are they going to officially denounce the new 7 wonders then?

International Justice Mission

International Justice Mission's History
Founded in 1997, IJM began operations after a group of human rights professionals, lawyers and public officials launched an extensive study of the injustices witnessed by overseas missionaries and relief and development workers. This study, surveying more than 65 organizations and representing 40,000 overseas workers, uncovered an early unanimous awareness of abuses of power by police and other authorities in the communities where they served. Without the resources or expertise to confront the abuse and to bring rescue to the victims, these overseas workers required the assistance of trained public justice professionals. When the poor are hungry, homeless or alienated, the Church has come to their aid by providing food, shelter and missionaries to meet the pressing needs. But when the poor have been oppressed, treate unjustly and suffered under the hand of someone more powerful, little was done on their behalf.

Accordingly, IJM was established to help fill this void, acting as an organization that stands in the gap for victims when they are left without an advocate. IJM staff members (human rights experts, attorneys and law enforcement professionals) receive case referrals from, and work in conjunction with, other non-governmental organizations and casework alliances abroad.

Knew of a Malaysian blogger - Rachel Loo - who blogs under "The Good Life", a lawyer by profession, is also an Associate of International Justice Mission, which is based based in Washington DC. IJM has many christian lawyers, investigators and social workers who brings Good News about Injustice to a Hurting World.

I hope that the Ministry / MATTA could assist in verifying the travel agencies as listed below. I suspect that they are cheating Malaysians lately with the promotion & selling vacation memberships together with Slyways Vacation and Dynasty Vision Resources. Todate, there are emails being circulated depicting the cheating scenarios.

Please let me know whether the following 3 travel agencies are properly registered and whether it’s a Malaysian company or not. From the website, it’s doesn’t show its affiliation to any organization which is rare.

Please treat this email urgently as we do not want to hear another case of Excellence Holidays where it folded up overnight.

------------------------------------

Please pass the word around with a link to this blog posting. The reason is because I did receive an email from a blog reader who regretted not reading my blog posting on Holiday Package earlier. This blog reader has purchased the membership and was hoping to cancel it now. Both Dynasty Vision Resources and Slyways Vacation are still operating out there hoping to rope as many members as they can BUT UNFORTUNATELY, they have not been licensed by the Ministry of Tourism.

We can't change the world on our own but if every single person was to lend a hand, the world could be a better place.

Holiday Package

*Latest Update - Receive an email from Ministry of Tourism confirming that the companies stated below were not licensed. Email posted in under Unlicensed Travel Agencies.
----------------------------------
Received this via an email. Could anyone verify the email or whether any of you have suffered the same fate?

Dear All,
If you see anyone selling this membership, please do not apply membership or any trip from them.

Slyways Vacation will sell the membership card for Dynasty Vision (as in attachment) in a lot shopping complex (e.g. Carrefour, Jusco .....).

When you walk in front to their counter, they will approach you. They will tell you that they are under government (KKKP). They are working for government so that they can get a lot cheap hotels for you. And they did a lot survey to get the cheapest travel ways in Malaysia. Just bullshit!!!!

Actually they are not working for government , their business is not related with government. They are private company. All the logo printed on the membership card is just display, they are not able to get cheap package. They just want to cheat your member fee - RM399.

The main things , their staffs are not qualify to become tour consultant. I had experience been cheated by an agent called Sankan. He is working for Slyways. When I get cheated then I called his leader (Idrus) and boss (Jimmy) for help. But they are irresponsible and they will only scold you and ignore your call. They just tell you that this staff already been terminated, your application is not in our system!

For Dynasty Vision, when you call to their service center, whatever question you ask they only have one answer. They don't even understand "English". Their boss is Encik Megat.

I hope nobody will be the next victim again. That's why I send this email to let all of you know DO NOT APPLY MEMBERSHIP OR TRIP PACKAGE with these two companies:-

Slyways Vacation
Suite 2-2-2A, 2nd Floor,
Wisma Rampai Town Centre,
Setapak
53300 Kuala Lumpur
Tel: 03-41492122
Fax: 03-41493122

Dynasty Vision Resources
73-1, 1st Floor,
Jalan 3/23A,
Off Jalan Genting Kelang
Taman Danau Kota
Setapak
53300 Kuala Lumpur

When I did a search, this Dynasty Vision Resources is somehow linked to Best World Vacation. Under the terms and conditions, the definition of Cards - Card(s) means the Best World Vacation card(s) bearing the Dynasty Vision Resources mark/logo issued by the company or authorized sublicense(s). Closely linked indeed!

There was no mention of where this Best World was located but during the reading of Best World's website, it did state that Dynasty Vision Resources has another office located at Sri Dagangan Business Centre in Kuantan.

The above is surely another case of lousy customer service or miscommunication between both parties.

Racial Bias Suit

What if you were discriminated against as in by-passed over for promotion, payed less than certain group of workers and treated unfairly in evaluation and disciplinary proceedings.

A legal suit is your solution! Some 20,000 people will benefit from a legal suit when the court instructs FedEx Express to pay a settlement sum of US$53.5m for those who are working for or those who have worked for FedEx since 1999 in the states of California, Washington, Utah and Hawaii. Specifically, the African-American and Hispanic workers were racially discriminated. This worked out to a sum of US$2,675 per person. (source: Reuters)

Wondering whether such racial bias suit could be brought up in Malaysian courts. Of course, you will need the expertise of such litigation firm, Altshuler Berzon LLP, from USA in bringing such class suit. Don't think any legal firms in Malaysia will jeopardise their business future fighting for such justice.

Nail House

Another case of 'Nail House' as they call it in China. It's just like a nail that was nailed hard into a big piece of wood, noticeable and stands out. Did post about other nail houses in other parts of China too. This 6-storey villa located in Shenzhen, is in middle of a construction site and the owner is from Hong Kong who is waiting for more compensation before moving out even though had been ordered to move. Initial compensation is 5.06 million yuan and they were demanding for 14 million yuan now. The owner said that the new value reflected the current market value. On the other hand, the land actually belonged to the owner but in 1992, new laws being implemented changed the land's status to state-owned. (source: Simon World)

Bible Book - An Assault Item?

A prison guard has been suspended from work pending further investigation and shall appear in court on 26 April to answer a charge under the criminal law. His charge - using a Bible to assault a prisoner in the Blue Earth County Jail located in Mankato of Minnesota, USA.

In a humourous saying, the guard was trying to drive the Bible's teaching through the prisoner's head ...... hehehe

Which Word Was Banned In Airport?

Albert Einstein said: "Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe." Having a rule or regulation in place is one thing, but knowing how to apply it is a totally different matter altogether. To paraphrase Einstein, "Never underestimate the power of stupidity."

The above quote could relate to the following controversial incident in Singapore's Budget Terminal during this age of terrorism:-
---------------------------------
Subject: A FAMILY HOLIDAY RUINED BY ILLOGICAL SECURITY OFFICERS

Dear Mr. Foo,
My name is Sandra Tan (I/C number 7328669G). It is with great disappointment and distress that I am filing a complaint to you with regards to my situation. My family (including myself, my husband, my daughter, and my son) planned a Darwin holiday for the March school vacation period and was supposed to depart on 09 March. Unfortunately, we were put in a situation by the security officers at the departure terminal, that was way beyond our control and we were not able to make our trip.

The following is an account of what had happened:-
I entered the Immigration gantry at about 7.15pm with my daughter (Belle Lee, 13 yrs old) to have our passport scanned and our hand carry luggage checked whilst my husband (Lee Ming Chong) stayed behind with my son (Caius Lee, 8 yrs old) at the ticketing counter to sort out my son's visa. After having mine and my Belle's passport scanned, we proceed to the security gantry to have our hand luggage and our bodies scanned. Belle passed the security gantry first, whilst I followed right behind her. A lady officer asked me to remove my boots for scanning, and I did as told immediately and put my boots inside the basket provided, for it to be scanned together with my hand luggage. I then proceed to the metal detector of which I cleared without the gantry beeping or detecting any metal objects. I was then asked to collect my luggage and my boots.

In the mean time, Belle was throwing away a sweet wrapper and retuning to me and saw me putting on my boots. Belle then asked casually "Mummy, why do you have to remove your shoes?" Whilst putting on my boots, I replied her and said that "they (the security officers) are afraid that we might keep bombs in our shoes (which is why I need to take it off to have it scanned)" Immediately, a security officer standing at the conveyor belt (Stephen S Naidira) who was standing in front of me said with a very rude tone "repeat what you just said". I clarified with him what he meant - is it for me to repeat what I had told my daughter? He said loudly again, to repeat what I had just said. So I did exactly what he told me. I said to him that "my daughter asked me why I need to take off my shoes, and I told her that you guys (the security officers) are afraid that we will keep bombs in our shoes." He immediately asked me to stand aside and said that he had to report it to his superior that I said the word "bomb" twice.

Then an Indian lady (Sivamalar) at the customs started hurling at me and my daughter andsaid that I said the word "bomb" twice and it is against the law and I can be sent to jail and they are calling the police. She (Sivamalar) was so loud and rude and she shoved us to the side, and refused to listen to my explanation. In fact, she got so aggressive that another officer Ricky Lim(I guess it's her supervisor) had to come forward to stop her from further attacking me and my daughter verbally, and specifically asked Sivamalar to "shut up". I told Ricky Lim that I would like to know the names of his staff because their attitude and rudeness were simply beyond any acceptable level. Immediately Sivamalar got so angry and aggressive that she started charging at Ricky Lim and hurled "What?! What?! What?! She (she meant me) the word "Bomb" twice, so what is wrong with arresting her (which is me) and we were told that if we heard the word twice, we will arrest!!"

At that time, Stephen S Naidira came to me again to intimidate me further by asking me to repeat what I said earlier to my daughter again. I refused to repeat again then because I believe he was deliberately asking me to repeat so that he can count the number of times that I mentioned the word "bomb". I also believe that that the officers were deliberately provoking me by being rude and intimidating, in the hope that I will retaliate in kind, thereby making their unreasonable actions justifiable. Despite my anger and the fact that my daughter was scared to tears by the situation, I knew I had to keep my cool. I sat aside with my daughter taking down names of the personnel involved on my mobile phone. I was told to wait for another officer of a higher rank to decide on the matter, and I was still hoping whoever the higher ranked officer that was coming will have the logical thinking to acknowledge that what I had said to my daughter was a simple, harmless private conversation taken completely out-of-context.

At about 7.30pm, the Sergeant-in-charge, Amran Buang came. After I explained the full context of the incident to him, he refused to make a decision and decided to escalate it further to the Auxilary Police and State Police. He said that the word "bomb" is very sensitive and I should not have mentioned it twice. I explained to him that I did not know saying the word "bomb" is against the law, and I further explained that I did not say the word "bomb" in a threatening context to the officer, the word "bomb" was taken completely out of context as part of an answer to my daughter's question. Despite my explanation, he said he cannot make the decision and my case has to be escalated to higher authorities.

Meanwhile, at about 7.40pm, my son's visa cleared and my husband and my son came in through the customs. After knowing what had happened, my husband tried to talk to Sergeant Amran Buang, further explaining to him that we are just a family going on holiday and what I have said to my daughter had been taken out of context. Again, no one was bothered to listen. And again, we were told to wait for another officer with an even higher ranking. With time ticking away and at 7.55pm with no sign of the higher authorities appearing, we knew then our hope of boarding our flight had diminished. Whilst waiting, Stephen S Naidira (the security officer) gathered with a few security officers at the side, including Sivamalar to discuss how they should present their statement to the police when they arrive later to make sure that they are adequately covered, and that they are just following the rule and doing what they were told to do. They said by insisting that they are taking actions "by-the-book", they would be ok.

I hope by now you have a clear picture of the situation. My kids were both crying then, with more and more policemen arriving which scared the living daylights of them, and with no hope to continue our holiday plans. I believe every action inside the terminal is recorded and I would insist that your review the CCTV recordings on that night to know that I am only stating the truth without exaggeration. You can also see that during the entire episode, I was not at any point defiant or rude or refused any further check by the officers, despite the infuriating situation that me and my family were put through.

I know it is important to stay vigilant to protect Singapore. I have young children, I know how important it is, which is why I complied without complaining when I had to remove my boots for scanning. However, here is an obvious case of the security officers trying to get away with their rudeness and aggressiveness by taking things way beyond what was necessary, in the name of following the security protocol. They were really angry when I asked for their names from Mr. Ricky Lim, and they knew very well then that they can abuse their power to make things very difficult for me and my family. At around 8.05pm, we were informed by the Tiger Airways personnel that the plane will have to depart and they will off-load our luggage from the plane. At around 8.10 p.m., the State Police and other policemen arrived to take our statement.

In the entire episode, the State Police and the Swissport personnel were the only ones who conducted themselves professionally and offered us consolation and meaningful advice. They have also at some stages expressed their personal views that they acknowledged this incident was gravely mis-handled on the part of the security officers. The State Police further confirmed that there is no case against us, and they would just need to complete the paperwork. The Budget Terminal manager came to meet me and said that whilst he empathized with our situation, it is an airport security protocol and frankly, it's "just too bad" that this happened to us. My statement and my daughter's statement only completed at about 10.45p.m. The counter service staff, Ms Nur Aisah Bte Ali Hassan was very helpful and advised us on our next steps. She was kind enough to ask us to return the next day to change the traveling dates and advised the additional charges involved. I am not given a report for this case, but my case number with the State Police is P/20070309/0015. I was already told by the State Police that the case is closed without further action.

For the ordeal that my family had been put through, I would want an official reply from CAAS and all relevant authorities addressing the following:-

* Whether the security officers were trained to handle passengers with such bad attitude and rudeness and if such actions by them are condoned by authorities. I would insist you to refer to the CCTV recordings during the period of the incident.

* What actions would be taken by CAAS and all relevant authorities with reference to both the security officers, Mr. Stephen S Naidira ad Ms. Sivamalar, for their unruly behavior and attitude? Surely, characters as such do not belong to a national airport that aspired to be a world class traveling hub.

* What actions would be taken by CAAS and all relevant authorities with reference to Sergeant Amran Buang, who had the authority to end this episode promptly, but instead decided to prolong our ordeal for no justifiable cause? Is it a protocol that even after establishing the facts that we, as a family poses no security threat, there is still a need to escalate the matter to the authority and have the State Police and other policemen carry out a full investigations only to end up in vain? Why is it that even at level of Sergeant, whom I reckon is better educated, experienced, and able to make logical sense of the whole situation, refuse to make a simple decision and end our ordeal quickly? Is this a Singapore civil service practice where decision making is pushed and shoved from one level to another no matter how obvious what the final decision should be from the very beginning?

* Whether all the officers concern are properly trained and competent to handle such situation. Besides hardware ( i.e. the protocol book), are they taught to apply the software (i.e . common senses)? Is it really a protocol that as long as the word "bomb" is mentioned twice by a person (once being asked to repeat by the officer) ??then no matter what context, tone situation and profile of the person who said it, it would not be taken into consideration? What if my daughter instead of asking me a simple question about my shoes, decided to say: "mummy, according to news report, there are speculations that the recent Indonesian air crash may be attributed to a bomb inside the plane." Would your security officer would come up to her and ask her to repeat one more time, and she would be put under arrest?

Your staff kept telling me that saying the word "bomb" in the airport is illegal and I can go to jail. They quoted newspaper examples of how people have gone to jail because of that. I think your staffs need to be trained to understand and differentiate situations and circumstances. As far as I knew, the people that went to jail had VERBALLY THREATENED staff members in the aviation service or had DELIBERATELY caused public alarm using sensitive words. My case was clearly none of the above. Even if, I am saying if, indeed its illegal to mention the word "bomb" in the airport no matter what context, the person involved need to be warned ahead of time. You cannot arrest a person for committing something illegal when the person has no idea that the word is illegal in the first place. Your staff could have given me a verbal warning to say that such sensitive words should be refrained in the airport and I would have walk away remembering the warning. But instead, they decide to let the matter escalate further.

* Who is to compensate for the expenses that are already incurred and forfeited for this trip, and our emotional stress and duress during the entire episode? The total cost incurred, including air tickets accommodation, and land tours amount to about $4,200. We had to put up with hours of humiliation with more than twenty policemen and officials surrounding us, questioning us, checking our luggage through and through. We had put up with never-ending questioning from different departments, and best of all, repeated checks on my same pair of boots. My kids were terrified, puzzled, disappointed and exhausted from this entire ordeal. My husband and I are left with one week of applied leave and no vacation and holiday to look forward to.

I would like to state that not everyone that we came across in this episode had been unpleasant. I wish to take this opportunity to express my gratitude for the empathy shown by the State Police and the Swissport personnel. I will be waiting for your reply. Please let me know when to expect it in email. In the mean time, I may seek legal advice for my rights and entitlement in this incident.

Yours sincerely

If I was that lady, I would have "blown" up rather much earlier for putting me in such situation / inconveniences / stupidity. Did a search on the word "bomb" in CAAS' website and no such act/rules/regulations mentioned that it was a no-no word.

Artic Island Up For Grab

An Artic island - Hans Island is up for grab now. Both Denmark and Canada have started to claim for the Hans Island even though it's barren and unhabited.

Denmark, had in 1984, raised its flag on the island and Canada did a similar thing in 2005. Why the sudden rush for such a place? The reason: an international race for oil, fish, diamonds and shipping routes, accelerated by the impact of global warming on Earth's frozen north. Both of them not only placed their respective flags BUT also their military presence.

Countries like Russia, USA & Norway are also rushing into the North Pole for potential minerals like oil and gas. With big guns such as Russia and USA venturing into North Pole, looks like the environmental effect couldn't be cared less even it has reached the worst case scenario.

Strong Ground

I really respect this houseowner for fighting for her rights in getting the right amount of compensation owing to forced relocation by the chinese government. The local authorities claimed that her compensation was way beyond the standards where she had rejected various offers.
Not only that she can't get her compensation, her house is situated in the centre of an on-going development despite her property being stucked in the centre of it. Non-construction workers were not allowed into the area and thus, she has not gone into her house lately. What's the point then.
The developer will be getting a court order to obtain their rights for a demolition to be conducted. This dispute is happening in Chongqing of China. (source: International Herald Tribune and Virtual China)
Another land dispute happened in China also but this time in Shanghai. Will you stay put in a house at a busy traffic junction.

I think this house should be on the list of every house buyer - "easy access to major roads" / "within seconds into city centre" / "walking distance to shopping centres". (source: Virtual China)

Malaysia vs. Indonesian Blogger

Not exactly the whole nation but Malaysia's Ministry of Tourism against Nila Tanzil from Indonesia. She was sent to Malaysia under her employer's name, SCTV, who was invited to send representatives to cover Malaysia's tourism activities during the Visit Malaysia Year 2007.

Thereafter, upon her return to Indonesia she put up some comments in her blog (seems to have been edited now) which were deemed unfavourable by Malaysia's Ministry of Tourism who put up a protest. Nila has been suspended until further notice due to that. And in an indiret manner, Nila was referred to as a liar by the Malaysia's Minister of Tourism, Tengku Adnan. There goes the war of words.

Even Indonesian websites have picked up this on-going battle of words:-
* Nila Tanzil: Mana yang Tak Benar? - DetikINET
* Menteri Malaysia Cap Blogger Indonesia Tukang Kibul - DetikINET

Reading: Malaysia Tourism Board Disappointing - Maverick Indonesia (got Nila's picture from here)

If you say the wrong things (deemed wrong usually) as a blogger, no matter how far you are, you won't escape. It seems that people nowadays can't take constructive criticisms. A shot in the foot for the Visit Malaysia Year 2007 as well.

At this moment, Indonesia is aiming for at least 1,000,000 Malaysian tourists to visit Indonesia this year out of a Malaysia population of approximately 24,800,000 (which represents 4%). Based on Malaysia's Ministry of Tourism's database for year 2006, only 1,217,024 Indonesians visited (the legal ones, of course) Malaysia out of an approximate population of about 234,600,000 (which represents 0.52%). Can Malaysia match Indonesia's 4% target as well which works out to about 9,284,000 Indonesian tourists?

Interesting Letter to EPF

Red tapes and unnecessary bureaucracy do at times get on your nerves. A particular student has received a final notice from her univeristy due to overdue university fees where delays by EPF has caused her EPF withdrawal to be held on. She has written a letter directed to the EPF's Chairman. Neverending stories from EPF lately.

Haslinda’s fax to the EPF Chairman follows:

WITHDRAWAL SCHEME FOR EDUCATION – SELF
HASLINDA BINTI ABD KARIM

I refer to the above matter.

I wish to reiterate my case to you. I have submitted the application for EPF Withdrawal Scheme for Education – Self on Wednesday, 17th January 2007 at your Shah Alam Office (REF NO. 001100000044825). I have also forwarded all the necessary documents required by you.

Until now, I have yet to receive the said cheque and also there is no communication on your end as to when I will be getting my payment. To my horror, today, I received a “SURAT GUGUR STATUS SEBAGAI PELAJAR” letter from my University. It is really shocking as I am now in my final year and in the midst of being dropped from the STUDENT STATUS. The letter also stated that I am given until 23 March 2007 to submit the EPF cheque.

Questions:
1. WHAT HAPPENED TO MY APPLICATION? I HAVE CHECKED WITH MY FRIENDS AND THEY ARE ALSO FACING THE SAME PROBLEM!! I WAS BEING TOLD BY YOUR EMPLOYEES THAT THIS IS DUE TO THE NEW MACHINERY/EQUIPMENT BEING INSTALLED, AND THERE ARE BACKLOGS THAT DATED WAY BACK TO LAST YEAR!! THAT IS NOT MY PROBLEM OR CONCERN!! WHERE IS MY MONEY??

2. WHAT HAPPENED TO MY MONEY/CONTRIBUTIONS?? DOES THIS MEAN THAT THERE IS NO MORE MONEY IN EPF AND THAT IS THE MAIN REASON BEHIND THIS DELAY??

3. SHOULD I FAIL TO SUBMIT THE EPF CHEQUE BY 23RD MARCH 2007 TO MY UNIVERSITY, I WILL BE DROPPED FROM THE STUDENT STATUS!! IS THIS ONE OF THE WAYS THAT YOU IMPOSE IN ORDER TO CURB THE MALAYS FROM FURTHERING THEIR STUDY?? IF THIS REALLY TAKE PLACE, I WILL NOT HESITATE TO SUE YOU AS THE NEGLIGENCE ARE DONE ON YOUR SIDE AND YET I AM BEING PENALISED FOR IT. FOR YOUR INFO, WE ARE BEING CHARGED RM80.00 BY OUR UNIVERSITY FOR LATE PAYMENT PENALTIES EVEN THOUGH IT IS NOT OUR FAULT, YOU MUST BEAR THE COST!! I AM SERIOUSLY ASKING YOU TO PAY FOR IT AS THE DELAY AND HICCUPS ARE ALL YOUR DOING!! THERE IS NO USE OF GETTING NEW MACHINERY/EQUIPMENT OR EXTENDING YOUR CHAIRMANSHIP FOR ANOTHER TWO YEARS WHEN THERE IS NO NOTICABLE IMPROVEMENT IN THE EPF SYSTEM!! MAYBE WE SHOULD PRIVATISE THE EPF!!

4. I have earlier complained on 16 January 2007 on the slow and inefficient service at your Shah Alam Office which has forced me to take ½ day leave. Again, I am attaching the same letter sent to you on the above date. ONCE AGAIN, UNTIL NOW, I HAVE NOT RECEIVED ANY FEEDBACK/RESPONSE FROM YOU!!

WHAT DO YOU PEOPLE WANT ME TO DO NOW?? WHAT IS YOUR RESPONSE ON THIS MATTER?? WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE?? AFTER READING A LOT OF COMPLAINTS IN THE NEWSPAPERS LATELY REGARDING YOUR SERVICES, I AM SERIOUSLY THINKING OF HIGHLIGHTING THIS ISSUE TO THE PRIME MINISTER PERSONALLY AS HE IS ALSO THE 1ST FINANCE MINISTER.
TREAT THIS MATTER SERIOUSLY AS IT INVOLVES MY FUTURE AND MY TRUST IN THE CURRENT, EXISTING SYSTEM!!

Yours faithfully
Haslinda Binti Abd Karim (source: Lim Kit Siang)

Blood Diamond - movie review

Blood Diamond - starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Djimon Hounsou, Jennifer Connelly, Arnold Vosloo & Michael Sheen. When I read how this movie has stirred some controversies and protest from African nations it got me to get this movie. The movie doesn't tell you about the diamond industry in the African continent but a similar tale that could happen in any of those African nations. Why the name Blood Diamond - it's where human blood are sacrificed in order to get your hands on those diamonds which have been extracted illegally with brutal slavery as well.

Leonardo acted as a scrupulous diamond dealer from South Africa that went into Sierra Leone. He happened to hear about rare diamonds found at a certain riverbed and got hold of a local guy who was forced by illegal miners to mine at that area. A lady reported bumped into their illegal venture and love blossomed too between her and Leonardo.

In the midst of a civil war commotion, they risked their lives to mine and cover the story respectively. The local guy did it to save his family by getting them out from the country. Leonardo did it due to his hunger for a bigger stone. The reported was there due to her passion for her work. A remarkable story and though each movie may exaggerate certain part of the story, it's still a prevalent situation in Democratic Republic of Congo where illegal mining of diamonds fund conflicts in DR Congo. It's where 1,000 people die everyday fueled by diamond smuggling.

In the early days of 1990s, different factions in countries like Angola, Liberia, Ivory Coast, the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Republic of Congo (also known as Congo Brazzaville) were funded by diamonds being sold to the world even though the mining process of brutal slavery. In a way, the world was funding the civil wars in those countries listed as above.

You can play a part too to help the situation in Africa as in before buying diamonds consumers should ask retailers for their policies on conflict diamonds and for certification that their diamonds were mined and sold legitimately.

Pan-Asian - UnMalaysian?

The recent ban on Pan-Asian looks in advertisements are not going to be accepted by government-owned television stations. Now let's see, RTM1, RTM2, TV3, NTV7, 8TV & Channel9, all these channels are government-owned and they are the only free TV channels available in Malaysia. Pan-Asians can only be involved in advertisements that will run in the only private television channels (other than those mentioned above) under the Astro station.

Why the non-acceptance? Even though if the Pan-Asians are having full & legitimate Malaysian citizenship? Reason? Discrimination Again?
