Tunnel Not So Smart After All

Upon reading the news article "Smart Tunnel closed indefinitely", it was shocking to me. One being that I'm a regular user which would cut down my time spent in traffic jam, to and from office.

Secondly, it would cause major traffic jam again during peak hours at Jalan Sungai Besi, Jalan Chan Sow Lin, Jalan Tun Razak and the domino effect it would have on other roads leading to it.

I found that the Smart Tunnel operator should disclose the real issue behind the closure as the reason stated (which was - used to divert floodwaters to prevent flooding in the city centre) in the news article cannot be accepted at all.

The Smart Tunnel was built with three levels with the lowest level being used to divert excessive rain water to a retention pond near my residential area before being released to a nearby Kerayong river.

Unless the lowest level couldn't accommodate the excessive rain water, the upper two levels would be used for rain water diversion too.

I doubt at my highest level that both the traffic levels would be used for the diversion exercise as any flooding of those two levels would cause extensive damage to all fixtures and fittings, electrical wirings, cameras and signboards, etc.

Even if it was true, why closed indefinitely? Closed during heavy downpour or few hours after that would be well understood but still closed even 12 hours after the heavy downpour?

Or was the real reason being that the Smart Tunnel operator dare not guarantee the road users' safety if the lowest level was used for rain water diversion while heavy traffic were still on-going at the above two levels???????

Yeah. I bet it's not so SMART after all.

Remember that all-so-high-tech (and very expensive) horizontal boring machine which was used for the construction of this tunnel?

It was first bought by a mega corporation who constructed the multi-million ringgit penchala link.

Probably that corporation did not see that us malaysian don't dig tunnels every day.

So why don't we cash in while we could before we store this huge machine for good in our backyard.

Talk about flooding the whole tunnel to channel the excess water -> i agree with u. That would definitely damage the tunnel internals and yes i would reckon the water will not be trickling but will be travelling at a very high velocity.

Lets not talk about the water. We now know it's useless anyway. BTW We've never seen it flooded...or have we?

I bet none of the above corporation did a traffic study. This tunnel causes major bottlenecking when entering Jalan TAR.

Who's the SMARTEST of them all? Maybe that guy I used to know from Sungai Siput

many road users are suspecting something big has gone wrong inside the tunnel now. tho they will still use it when it re-opens due to bad traffic (no choice).

the lowest level is only used for water diversion but they closed the whole 3 levels ..... you tell me!

don't worry about lamp, security camera or whatever.. they all ready have done pressure test on that fixtures.

even KL does not have rain, but the other part of KL stay haying heavy rain. If level water in Sg. Klang exceed 150m3/s, some of water stay need to transfer into SMART Tunnel.

Furthermore, it need time to clean the tunnel from mud...

Don't worry about having water flow under heavy traffic.. Engineer had think how to solve the problem.. It will not open to traffic if it not save..
